When is it classed as 'doing a runner'?

A topic done to death here, and I've no interest in getting into the rights and wrongs of doing such a thing. But when is doing a runner from the cops actually considered as such? Not so much from a cops perspective, but from a bikers.

    Imagine the (hypothetical) scene......

Light traffic, 50 zone, pootling along at around 50 - legal speeds - muppet in a turbo'd "pfffft" (dump valve) 4 wheeled machine pulls along side, revving hard and obviously up for a little 'action'. Unaware of the power/speed advantage most motormacycles have over all but the most expensive and finely tuned 4 wheeled sports monsters, he thinks he can beat you.

You enter a 100K zone, the cage accelerates hard, you pause then open the throttle hard, accelerating fast, making the cage driver look like he's standing still. As you do so your radar detector goes off, you glance to the opposing lane of the motorway and notice, a little too late, a police car (poor observational skills duly noted) coming in the opposite direction. The police car driver switches on his flashyblinkylights - you keep it nailed. By the time you roll off the throttle you're doing illegal speeds, but on a clear motorway. You glance in your mirror and note that said cop car has driven over the centre medium and is now headed in your direction. You keep to your speed, then take the first junction off the motorway and blast through local lanes. Never to see the police car in question again.

    A runner?

    snip..
I would class that as a runner. Esp when it looked like the policeman was trying to pull you over. The bottom line is the policeman was never seen again so employ the thought," Out of sight and out of mind"

As soon as you realise that they want to pull you over, and you make a mental decsion NOT to conform, its a runner.

if you think about the logic involved - there's a good chance you'd be up to something like 150, with very little effot. For the cop to catch you, not only do they have to get to 150 to match your speed, they have to beat it to catch up. And that's if you haven't just whacked it open to 200+ which would mean in theory for the fuzz to catch you, they'd ideally need to be up to 250-280 in the blink of an eye, just to get your rego. So you could (balls permitting) just keep going and hope they didn't get too much of a distription.

But, being me, I'd be paranoid and most likely give it up way before then, and to top it off, me being me, coming out of the 50 to a 100 zone, I would have popped the front wheel up high and fukt off which would piss them off, so they'd try harder, while you just cruise. The boy racer gets pinged by the cop, you go past them waving the birdie..
    so, don't speed kids..

LOL Twice (yes TWICE) I have been riding through Deans Ave (?- road that goes through middle of Hagley Park) at night going too fast, when a cop car with lights blazing/ flashing came up behind me. Heart skiped beat. Began to pull over. Cop car accelerated away to continue on its merry way. PHEW!

As for your "hypothetical" runner Biff. Yep, I reckon it was... err... would have been. Of course, if you didn't "see" the cop car, then it wasn't ... err ... wouldn't have been.

Yup, I can believe that. And this hypothetical person would probably have consoled himself with the thought that said cop was on his way somewhere else.

If, hypothetically speaking, it was me and it was 'obvious' that I was being chased, I'd stop in a heart beat. But if there was a car behind me, and there was a chance that the cop may attempt to stop the car first, and there was enough of an air gap to instil confidence that my rego hadn't been clocked - then I'd probably keep going until I was sure it was me he was after. But I wouldn't start taking unnecessary risks, or attempt anything resembling a runner in town. Snot worth it IMO.

    Aaron - You're a bad influence. Hypothetically.

Definitly a runner, but not a particularly dangerous one. I'd say most of us would think hard about taking a similar course of action-only do it if you know ya can get away though!

I thought the ruale of our fair land dicatated you salow down and/or get out of the way of those flashinglightsandwailingnoises vehicles.

In hypothetically failing to do that you're taking a decision to evade said flashinglightsandwailingnoises vehicles, which I would class as a runner...

Ironically my description would stick whether you are actually the one being persued or not...
