L-Plate Rider
Recently arrived in NZ and wanting a new mode of transport. I need my bike license. In order to get that I need to do a test...on a bike.
My question is do i buy the bike 1st (as I surely need it to do the test) but I cannot ride or can I do a test without 1st having a bike?

If so buy the bike.
If not you could go to one of the places such as say Pass Rite which will hire you the bike to do the test.
At least they would when I did mine.

it really depends on a few things, mostly what type of bike you like. cruiser, sports bike or commuter (there are a few other variations).
a good place to look is
www.trademe.co.nz and more recently www.tradermainia.co.nz
your local trade and exchange aswell. also go in to a couple of bike shops around your area and see what they have.
not having a licence sort of limits what you can test ride since not many people will want you test riding a bike in case you crash it (obvious i know). If you know some one who has a bike, they may let you borrow it for you basic handling test and then once you have done the scratch and win paper, you will be in a better position to go and test ride bikes, be sure to test a few and get a bike you are comfortable using. The whole thing is pretty stupid can't ride a bike without a license, can't get a license without riding a bike. Legally you either learn in a paddock or cart your bike around in a custom built trailer.
I bought my bike first, you need a couple of weeks practise before you can pass the test. The guy who owned the testing spot near me let me practise on it whenever I wanted during the week because its just a remarked netball court. Never been stopped by the cops either. Still don't bother with the L plate.
The only bikes that can pass the test easily are gn125's, gn250's possibly could but its impossible with an fxr150 or other sports bike. I had to borrow a bike to pass the test.
don't bother with a gn, get a fxr. I wouldn't touch a two stroke rgv either.

You can get a learners licence without owning a bike first. You will need to borrow or rent a bike to comple the basic handling skills certificate (BHS). The Welly BHS guy has bikes available for this purpose.

Yes I did a course with Road Safe (Andrew Templeton) in WGTN.
Morning was spent learning to ride, starting right at the basics as if youve never touched a bike in your life. He suggests that if you can drive a manual car and ride a bicycle you should cope.
Then in the afternoon we all did our handling skills cert.
He has a few bikes he hires out as part of a package - great if you've never ridden and need some experience and pointers first (and of course dont own a bike).
Then your in a better position to go buy a bike - at least you can take it for a test drive!

However you could buy the bike first and put it in your living room, so it is easier to polish until you have the "L"
