For actual gear I have had good luck with the Neo Mugello stuff that cycletread sells (and I think a few other places as well). The jacket and pants kept me nice and try through all that terrible weather we had a couple weeks back but my gloves really let me down and my lower arms got pretty wet as a result of that. It has kept me dry in a pretty torrential downpour but I haven't tried riding in it for a long time in the wet, just my half hour commutes.

Easy. Either invest in a bad ass bike umbrella, grab some pallet wrap and learn to hold your breath for ages or invest in your very own umbrella man (if budget allows you could alternatively get the hot umbrella girl flavour).
If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.
Rainbird (http://www.equipoutdoors.co.nz/conte..._clothing.html) sell very lightweight, highly compressible jackets and trousers that go over your leathers (or whatever you use). I am now on my second set after getting some 20 years from the first set. I scrunch 'em up and carry them in the tail bag. All the time. They are not that expensive either. I used to get them from Para Rubber (if they still exist).
They are also windproof and work wonders on really cold mornings.

When I was campaigning (successfully, as it turned out), for patrol bikes in Christchurch in 2005, my boss asked the big question
"What happens when it rains"
I answered as a motorcyclist should, "One gets wet".
He was worried about the bikes getting parked up in bad weather. I did some checks with the Met Service, they told me that it rains 163 days a year in Auckland, but only 82 days a year in Christchurch.
Funny, when I moved from Auckland to Christchurch (2003) everyone down here was always banging on about how wet Auckland always was. Then they would sigh, look out the window, and say "We could do with some rain".
It's hard to keep everyone happy.
I have Revit riding suit which has a Gore Tex liner and for when I am in jeans and leather jacket I have a set of Revit wet weathers which pack down very small and come in separate carry bags.
Don't forget to buy a neck roll to stop water running down your neck.
Keep on chooglin'
