They were not a bad bike - just overshadowed by the featherbed version that came after...

All the cast iron twins (triumph, BSA and Norton) were lovely soft tuned things and usually a pleasure to own and ride... Then everyone wanted to go fast... and it all went downhill from there..

They were made to run on the poor fuel after WWII, and had compression ratios around 6:1. Better fuels came along, and the performance was ramped up to keep pace. By the '70's, the Norton twin had grown to 850cc and 60hp....which shows how over designed and understressed the original was.

I think I ran into the PO a couple of years back at a canty VCC swap meet. He was looking for a cast iron head and i was looking for an 88SS head for a customer. I knew where an iron one was and pointed him in the right direction.

Discussing it with him, I told him of a similar bike in ChCh that I'd been supposed to do the motor on. Owner died and sons did it all in the end. Dad had told them to see me as i'd found an essential part for him - a double speed oil pump worm.....IMO a must to fit restoring one of these. To keep up with traffic now they've got to be flogged a bit.
