Traffic flow rate AKL Southern Motorway

I'm tired of the build up of traffic on the Southern Motorway coming into the city after 5.00 pm. So, I went looking for information on the traffic flow rate through the day, maybe if I leave half an hour earlier the traffic is lighter. Luckily I can lane filter if the traffic is too slow when I'm on my bike, but on those days when I have to take the car I'd like to try travelling at different times.

But do you think I can find that sort of information? No way, no charts of traffic flow across the 24 hours of the day, no tables of traffic flow by the hour.

Lots of cameras, but I can't log on and look at pretty pictures while driving.

Anyone know a web site where traffic flow on the Southern Motorway is broken down to flow rates by the hour - north and south.

Don't know of anything specific, but using Google Maps, you can set what time you leave on which day, and it will adjust your travel time based on the data it has (and you can add the traffic layer).

Realistically it's never the same, an accident here or there etc. Last Saturday there was a really decent one just south of Ellerslie southbound. Lane 1 shut, traffic south crawling and predictably northbound ground to a halt as well. Then earlier this week one on the Mt Wellington on ramp southbound and that was just after the truck in front of me locked up his rear wheels, went sideways in a cloud of smoke and managed to not hit the slow moving traffic in front...

    Ah... never a dull moment

NZTA have the data to provide hourly breakdowns, you just need to find the right person to speak to to get at it.

But to save you a shit load of trouble why don't you leave an hour earlier one day and an hour later another day and see what the difference is?

Dunno if it's available in NZ but in the Philippines we have an app called Waze. Not only gives you a route to follow but you and other drivers can update it with current traffic conditions.

Tuakau to the city or back Google maps drive times assume you will be %20 below speed limit at all times, but the variance is about right for a car or 50% skeptical for a bike. Eg says it will take 10 mins longer than normal takes 5 longer than normal.

Traffic flow north of Mt Wellington towards Penrose yesterday afternoon at 2.45 could be measured in metres per minute. Stationery.

Typically, north of Drury heading towards Auckland, every morning from 06.30 thru 09.00 - same story.

Heading south on SH1 any time after 14.45 (and heaven help you if you're trying to get on to SH1 from SH20 or Redoubt Road) and up to 18.30 - again, stationery.

Curiously and as Maha said, nothing on SH1 this morning. I came in from the west and even the on-ramp lights at Papakura were off. Clear all the way to north of SH20 - that's happened perhaps 3 times in several years.

Or maybe it was clear because the on-ramp lights were out?

Bingo! Slightly off-topic but TPTB have been deliberately slowing traffic down and thickening the congestion in Auckland for years now IMHO (motorway on-ramp lights, traffic lights being installed wherever possible, no more discretionary right hand turns, glacial progress on installing red light cameras to keep intersections clear).

I can't decide if it's because they're being conned by flash-harry traffic 'consultants' or it's a conspiracy to get everyone on public transport (which also can't cope with the numbers).

What we need is a monorail! Or maybe an inner city loop...sigh.

It is available here but very few people actually use it.

In Kamo today there was a dog on the road at 7.30am, peak hour! 7.30am! There were at least 3 cars inconvenienced! Never seen so much anger and frustration!

I thought the Auckland M/Way was only open between the hours of 1am and 3am? the rest of the time it's either basically or actually closed.

Bugger, hard beat living any but in *Auckland. It doesn't matter what job you do, there are opportunities in smaller less congested areas. Some people drive (if you can call it that) an hour or more to get to work. A family friend lived in Browns bay but worked in Wiri, he moved to just north of Thames right on the waters edge, the commute was the same but the life style so much better.

Tuaranga is getting the same, last time I was there (last year) it seemed as though there were lights every 50 meters down Cameron road. Frustrating as fuck in a car.

    *Not the CBD.
