KBers in Ashburton? (Checking out a new girl in Ashburton)

I'm based in Auckland and have found my future girl in Ashburton and need someone to check her out and feel her around for me.

No, it's not like that , but rather I've found a bike in Ashburton on Trademe that I am serious about getting, however being based in Auckland it's quite a trip to check it out and walk away empty handed.

Is there anyone based in Ashburton who would be willing to check out the bike for me in person? If so, send me a PM and we can sort something out. I can probably flick some cash your way for a box of beer if you're that way inclined as compensation for your time; or ya know, you do it out of love or something

The things I want to know are what most people would look for when checking out a bike in person, so nothing too fancy:

    • Oil leaks
    • Fork seal condition
    • Chain and sprocket wear
    • Suspension feel
    • Brake discs and pads
    • General condition - paint and frame
    • A test ride if you are allowed

If all goes well, I fly down, pay the owner some cash monies and ride the bike back to Auckland. A quick estimate looks about $450 for transport down to Ashburton and ferry rides & fuel back to Auckland.

I've never ridden 1,200kms in one go before and may be biting off more than I can chew. Would this be doable over a 2 day period? Otherwise I'll look at getting the bike transported up here.

    Cheers!

Have ridden new plymouth christchurch back to picton in one day......
doable yes....but 1200 plus ferry in one day bit much.

transport is quick cheaper and easy....
    riding though is more fun
Opinions are like arseholes: Everybody has got one, but that doesn't mean you got to air it in public all the time....

The initial pricing I've seen (yet to get a proper quote) seems to be a hell of a lot more $ to have it shipped to Auckland. But that's a job for tomorrow to find out actual costs.

rode auckland to waimate in one day, was one of the most memorable trips i have done for all the right reasons. very doable, remember the ferry is a three hour compulsary rest stop, time ya crossing so as not to arrive in welly during rush hour.

Nice bike for a good spin.

Plan your trip carefully. Make sure you have some 'help' along the way, just in case. Take your time. Enjoy!

A guy who worked in the same company as me tried something like that. Fell asleep at the wheel 20 kms short of home and was killed. I've never done more than 427km in a day (because I've had no reason to go further) but I'd imagine 2 days at 600km each would quite do-able as long as you throw in some good breaks along the way. The only problem any sort of distance has given me to be honest is a sore arse and you do need to factor that sort of fatigue in as it can lessen your attention to what's in front of you.

    OK, playing devil's advocate...

Why that bike when there are others for sale closer to you?

I can't...but, a stranger to the transaction would presumably have less bias than the seller.

Its a price that's doable, a colour I like and KMs I can tolerate.
