Paikok hill road - 70 KPH

I heard a rumour that Paikok hill is now 70 kph.

Anyone like to confirm or deny this?

Time for the fuzz to make some more cash, I supose.

It's been public knowledge for some time and we have been waiting for it to happen. Considering the number of accidents on the road it was bound to happen sooner or later.

The plan I saw had a mix of 50kph and 80kph areas. Could have been reduced to 70 I suppose...

It could be that the Govt is trying to stop WRXs and the like falling off the road and killing themselves. In reality at will slow down 5% of the people who do ACTUALLY go faster than 70km/h.

Not really... The accident stats on that road really are shockers and there is not really much that can be done to physically improve it so this is actually pretty reasonable.

I've commuted over it for a while in da starlet and reckon a 70 or 80 kph limit is reasonable. Yes, you can go faster but there is a high risk of rubble and stuff on the road, 4WD's, boy racers etc. As time goes by, more people are using it as the land in the valley becomes divided into life style blocks etc.

Bear in mind it's a pretty dodgy road. Every year it is closed at some stage due to half the hill falling on it. This is the most cost effective solution... (I don't like it either but thats life)

    Cheers

et al confirmed that it is indeed now 70-80km/hr over the length of the road.

Are they going to do the same on the Manawatu Gorge? It has to be closed at least once a year for slips (sometimes for three months!) and is also winding. There is precious little you could do to realign it. Personally I won't use it unless I absolutely have to.. prefer to go to NP via Taupo and Awakino Gorge... now that is the scenic route!

Over most of its length, anything faster than 70kmh is just ferkin stupid, or unattainable for anything less than a highly-skilled rider. Imposed speed restrictions where there is no way that the restriction could be met or exceeded (like the 100kmh limit on the Maraka loop), seems to me to be a waste of time.

    I'm with Hitcher.

Can someone please explain to me how reducing a speed limit that was unattainable for all but the nutters (who incidentally wouldn't be obeying ANY speed limit over that road anyway) then I will begin to understand why the limit has been lowered.

Put your hand on your hearts and tell me - aside from the handful of straight bits, who here exceeds 80k thru paekak?

To my mind, lowering the limit makes no difference to me, just sets the threshold for a pursuit lower.

Signs have gone up, its 80 from Pauatahanui to Battle Hill and then 70 from there to Paekak.

    RIP Paekakariki Hill Road

I rode up there on Sunday and spotted the new signs, speed limit is posted in several places along the way so you really cannot miss it. Someone said they heard it will be heavily policed/enforced. No doubt the boy racers and other idiots in cars who caused this to happen will go somewhere else and we are left with a sedate but very scenic route.

Going over 70 is only stupid if you have to cut a corner to make it around them.

If you are able to go 70-100 (or even faster maybe) without cutting corners, then i dont see a problem with it.
I can sit on 100 easily, without a worry at all.
Its only the people who cut blind corners etc that make it dangerous.

We have been through this time and time again, its always the same.

Yep the big hand of political correctness descends on us all. We have speed signs, yellow no passing lines and yellow dashed no parking lines creeping up on us all over the place.

Along with more cars, faster cars, worse roads, less patience and less capable drivers... Too hard to fix all those things while yellow paint is so cheap... (not to mention profitable)

Yeah classic this morning was I drop my Toyota off at Rutherford and Bond in Porirua, Mrs comes to pick me up and she can't park outside any more for the dashed yellow line. Had to park up the hill a bit. Now have you ever seen many cars parked there before, its not exactly so busy that it could have been a problem? So I'm buggered if I know about half of the decisions the road bureaucrats make.
    Cheers
