Why do you go to biker runs

there were a whole lot of Auckland bikers who rushed out his morning to get their Granny Herald paper to see if they got their pic in it from the Westpac Run. And there is not a pic to be seen. Ohhhhh.

WHich poses the question - Do riders go on these rides for the charity or for the feel good factor. AND before I go on I will exempt the TOY RUNS around the country at Christmas when every body (except the Bunny) have feelings of of goodwill and get caught up in the commercialism that is XMAS.

SO many time I have heard " ANd there was not TV, or Papers, or Radio, or whatever there.

Do you go to these runs?
Do you go to be seen?
Do you go to see your mates?
Do you go because you want to ride in a big group?
Do you even give a rats about the charity?
Would you go if it was for the save the Gay Black Whales Wheel Chair Fund?

To be surrounded by bikes and bikers and to see the bloody cage drivers held up on the on-ramp by a single bike as we rumble past

This was my first time. What did it for me was the different bike cultures riding together as one. It also brought a tear or two into my eyes just seeing this sight!

I don't like being amoungst crowds of people - bikes or no bikes

I care about the charities - but don't contribute...I get asked to support this charity and that charity every day,if I supported every one I'd be broke in a week,so I refuse them all....this makes me feel like a prick,and makes me angry at the charities for making me feel this way.I support the local schools and one or two charities I pick out as special.

I`m with Motu,there`s a big charity run in Plymouth every year,attracts 6000 bikes from all over the country.Pratting around at walking pace while your clutch fries isnt for me.I head straight for the meeting place up by the seafront,there are stall,rock bands and all the bikes parked up to look at.for some strange reason they usually let the Harleys or Gold Wings lead the ride,another no-no for me,bloody embarassing them even sharing the same number of wheels let alone riding behind them.they alternate the cause every year,when it`s the Dog`s home they get F-all from me,when it`s the Hospice I`ll give them a couple of quid because they do a bloody good job and it makes me sick that they have to have nurses walking around with a money bucket at all.It costs a pound to do the run(about 3 dollars),that money going to whichever charity is "it" that year,they also collect at the end as it`s a really popular event with the public,never,ever been any hassle there despite the large numbers.

I went on the Coast to Coast rally late last year, I'm sure the entry fee went to a charity but I can't remember what the charity was.

I did it for the experience of riding in a large group of bikes, there are certain benefits like doing 150kph down the Foxton straights and knowing that the police would have a hard time stinging you for it.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the major reasons for aligning these rallies with charity is to make it easier to get the support from the local council & police.
Can you imagine someone trying to organise a rally without the charity connection: "Can we have a police escort, close these roads & cause all other traffic to be delayed cause me and some mates want to go for a ride that nobody else will benifit from...please?"

I went this year but won't go again,Riding in that large a group at that speed
is not for me.As far as charity goes I only ever give to the surf rescue clubs.
For those people I can't give enough but the professional bludgers get nothing from me.And I don't feel bad about it either.

I'm suspecting that [s]he/it is one of the sillier forum members having a prod and a laugh at everyone's expense...

Still, [s]he/it doesn't seem to be causing *that* much annoyance (nowhere near the BUACA level - should we use that as a unit of annoyance? Like, if someone misspells a word, is that about a millibuaca?), and does at least have to go to the trouble of composing h[er]/[is]/its trolls, so it's worth it for the amusement value, eh?
