    Adventure riding abroad?

I ought to be getting on with my study but my all time favourite distraction is planning adventures for the near and distant future. This one is more about the distant future - one day we would love to do some adventure touring in Oz or some other destination where it is affordable to either travel independently or take an organised tour. Not bothered whether on our own bikes or hired bikes. Like to get off the tarmac as much as possible. Having said that, I have limited riding experience beyond grade 3. Happy tenting or budget accommodation.
Anyone done anything like that? Any thoughts?
Like I say, I should be doing my study but daydreaming about riding is much more fun! We are daydreaming about all the riding we are yet to do in New Zealand too. Hankering to experience some overseas adventure but I don't know that any other country could top some of the rides we have done right here at home.

    Google search,

    Northern adventure rider
    Or
    Central north island adventure rider

They do both NZ and overseas based trips with all the support and options you can think of

You've got the more organised stuff like Himalayas and probably plenty of other places.

Doesn't stop you simply buying a bike / renting one / shipping your own to a country and going exploring.

I shipped my BMW to USA (LA) and then spent 6-7 weeks touring the western states and a little of Canada, not much off road back then (hadn't really started adv riding) but groups over there are also building back country discovery routes (BDR) for each state plus others like TAT and CDR.

When you're keen, probably pop over to AdvRider (http://advrider.com/index.php) which has specific regional forums for as much detailed advice from locals as you could probably get.

Still on my bucket list is doing the Dalton and Dempster highways to the top of the USA and Canada, but I'd rather wait until a year-round highway extension is built to Tuktoyaktuk in Canada (under construction currently).

Who did you use for shipping and what did it cost to get the bike there and back if you don't mind me asking?

I may not be as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I always was.

It was about $3000, using Mainfreight (ex Wellington) and then their subsidiary Kiwi Shipping over in LA.

I went with Ken (http://www.kiwiken.co.nz/) and about a dozen bikes were shipped over, and besides an ST1100, the rest were Harleys (so I could use jokes about 98% on the road, the other 2% made it home). The beauty of Ken, is that he gave a book with routes, but you could modify, shortcut, lengthen as you wished. Besides border crossings I mostly did my own thing, as they kept losing hours in Harley dealers buying ... Harley stuff

I think NGARNZ are doing annual trips over, much more adv biased, doing TAT etc?

Thanks for the comments. Lots of food for thought and thanks also for the link to the adventure rider webiste. We mix it up a lot with tramping trips and other stuff like that so there is lots to scope for daydreaming about all the adventures we could have. Sometimes my husband has to rein me in as it can be logistically impossible to do everything we want to do. Like last summer we spent a couple of weeks in the Whanganui and Tongariro National Parks. I had really wanted to do the 42 Traverse but with all the tramping, camping and other gear we carted up there, we had to leave the bikes behind. Nooooooo!!! Ha ha. It sure is great to get out there.
    Thanks again.

Mike Britton (based in Hamilton) is still doing overseas tours. So far this year has done tours to Vietnam, Bali, Mongolia, Bolivia and is currently touring Cuba. Iran will be added to the mix next year.
