First time in NZ - advice on buying a second hand bike in Auckland!

Hi all,

Someone recommended I come here for advice on buying a second hand bike in Auckland.

I'm from the UK, arriving in Auckland for the first time this week and will be looking to pick up a 125 - 250 CC bike quickly.

What are the best sites / places to shop for second hand bikes in NZ?

Is there anything I should be particularly aware of / look out for when buying a bike in NZ?

(Bonus question - Any advice on where I could get a luggage frame for the back of the bike?)

Trademe.co.nz is a good starting point will and give you an indication of prices

Something to keep in mind, If your bike is 2000 or newer WOF last 12 months

Hi, most us Kiwi's go HERE for a 2nd hand bike. that site can also get you a pack rack or go to any bike shop and order one, Cycle Treads in Auckland (Barry's Point Rd) carry lots of stuff.


There's not much to look out for particularly (aside from the usual mechanical stuff) but a current Warrant of fitness with 6-12 months on it is good or a new one on purchase is better. Also make sure it has some registration...again the more the better. Good luck and welcome to our slice of the planet when ya get here.

Motorcycle doctors do appraisal of bikes within Auckland and there other branches. Cost depends on how far away the bike is from their shop in Glenfield.

You can check car jam for information on the bike and whether or not the odometer is legit.

Op, why a 125 to 250?
Rules on bike sizes are different than uk,and these are not so popular anymore as learners aren't restricted to 250.
If it's just as you want something light and nimble anything up to 650 can suffice, and a bigger bikes more likely to get luggage on it already.
