You don't mean the ENTIRE way do you......?

The biggest problem I have with that road is the dickheads who believe it is okay to cross the centre line. Stand on the side of the road one day and count how many dickheads cross the centre line around blind corners.

I nearly collected an MX-5 a couple of weekends ago. He was about a metre inside my lane as I came around a corner. It was a close enough call that I turned around and chased him (takes a fair bit to get me rarked up enough to do that). Took a while to catch him and when I did he didn't seem too keen to stop for a friendly chat.

How about some road signs reminding people to keep inside their own effing lane, although they will probably get ingnored just as the 70-80kmh ones will.

    Saw the signs too

Shot through there on Saturday and the signs were up.
Sparky hit the nail on the head. The danger is pricks that cut corners and some of the straights through Piecock. I find that fear of a bull bar through my skull tends to limit my speed more than anything else.
I've had some pricks come head on at me on my side of the road, look straight at me and think, only a bike so no need to inconvenience myself by swerving back where I belong, he will move over further. Arseholes the lot of em.
Can't see many places where Mr Plod could park up to monitor traffic though? Even the possums have to pass each other in single file.

edit: anyone remember years ago when two motorcycles collided head on through Piecock. both died. Sad thing was one of them was probably riding on his own side of the road and didn't deserve to be taken out by a bike that should have known better

Hard to disagree with any of this..

However a few signs are cheaper than a central wire rope median strip so.... 70kph here we go.. Bummer...

I have to agree about the speed limiting fear of a Nissan Patrols bull bar though... Even in the Starlet...

Might pay to check your speedo there buddy.

Not even Cycosis could do it and I haven't seen anyone go over that hill quicker.

I'm keen to see you try though

    Paekak versus Akatarawa

Over the paekak hill there is two lanes and more width to the road to avoid a collision, hopefully.

I was absolutely gobsmacked at the idiots going thru the Akatarawa road last Friday. 70kph ? I don't think so.

I drove this road in my cage to see what condition the road was in and whether I would ride this on my bike .... but I don't think so ... not with those idiots out there who think they own the road.

I love riding and don't see why one would risk this width of road when a wider one like Paekakariki would be just as much fun .... and call me sceptical but I have been up that road (Paekak) every day this week and the cars I saw were in no way adhereing to the speed limit.

Whether it's 70 or 100 doesn't matter ... you still have to expect the unexpected 'I own the road' drivers and riders.

    Safe riding all.

Posted speed limits are supposed to be set based on the 'speed environment'. The environment is based on density of roadside activity. i.e. where there are houses, schools, parking, pedestrian traffic the speed environment is low (50 km/h). When there is less roadside activity (i.e. rural home entrances, vege shops) the speed environment is higher (70 km/h usually). When there is very little/ no roadside activity the speed environment is 100 km/h. The number and severity of bends do not come into the calculation. These bends would ususally have a speed advisory sign or a "winding road - next 5km", or one of various other signs. The people who have set this limit do not understand the phsychology (spl?) of people towards speed limits. If they want to reduce the crazy boy racers on the hil they could use the boy racer laws. This latest move will not change anything.

they better not make the manawatu gorge a 70kph area, i commute through it every day on my gn and still get held up by boy racers and nanna's alike, cages just cant cmopare to bikes thruogh that road.....unless there is hold ups, there is a set of lights in the m-gorge and some bum ayyempted to race me away from them in an old commodore! i took off as hard as possible and i cant recall going under 95kp/h.....die infernal cage dwellers. but seriously if it is made into a 70/80k road then grannies will do 25k's instead of the usaull 45.....goddamit

If the Police can set up speed traps with 4 or 5 cops writing tickets, why can't they set up a failing to keep left trap. One cop in a deck chair with an R/T on the side of the road, three down the road writing them up.
This is one trap I'd have no problem with.
