but no, its on ACC feel good propaganda fluff.

I'm not annoyed or angry, just have an eye for irony and the absurd hypocracy that state depts. churn out...

Next week we'll have the fire dept doing how to light fireworks safely videos. The guy will be throwing matches over his shoulder, but it will be ok because he's not at a grassy beach or near the family stockpile of crackers.....

Not quite how I see it. Quite simply the majority of motorcyclists could use some upskilling. Yes, cars play their part in incidents, but you can't easily control that, can you? What you can control is yourself, and if you're the best you can be, you're going to not only cover yourself, but potentially the poor skills of the car driver (they didn't see you, but you saw them, anticipated the risk, braked, prevented an incident etc). I'm not saying all the fault/responsibility is yours, but if you can stack the deck in your favour, why wouldn't you?

The real headache however, is that often, those that would benefit the most from upskilling won't, while those that are proactive and do upskill, are generally the safer riders already. There is a perception amongst some that rider training is boring and motorcycling is for fun, but I fail to see how the points are mutually exclusive? Training can be fun, and having increased skills increases my odds of returning home safe... why wouldn't you want that?

So... how does the likes of ACC reach those that don't want to upskill? Being a government organisation tasked with that job (amongst others) they simply can't go back and say "Well, we tried, they said no, so we gave up. Lets have lunch". That's why you see these different initiatives. For what it's worth, I do see a shift in the general populace (ignoring the extreme ends) to a more safety concious attitude, more partaking in rider training etc.

    That's the key fact.

Those who would benefit the most from training are precise
ly the ones who think they have nothing to learn.

    It's a training quandary.

On its own it does not... it might however inspire people to talk about it or even engage the competitive nature in getting people to self assess their own skills more critically.

I have to admit, when it got to the part about must do it in 2 bike lengths it made me think.
I could do it in less on the Hayabusa, the DR, the 1100, I haven't tried to do one that tight on the CB1300.

I didn't video it but I did one just to see last night. I could use some practice but no problem.

Thinking critically about our own skill set seems like good value for spend.

It's a competition. You can win stuff by taking part.

You can also choose not to.

    What's the problem?

Yup. Touch the front brake or pull the clutch in while the bike is cranked over and it's likely to end in amusement.

From a stand still, I can do it in one bike length on the RF. Give or take a hundred mm. But ACC would likely not condone doing skids.

That's behind the garage at home though. Haven't found anywhere suitable to try it rolling and marked out. Not sure how I'll get on to be honest. I don't recall ever having tried it, or any practical skills that would be learned from it.
