You would need to keep a good gap between the next vehicle so that if you saw a boulder coming down you could stop to avoid it or speedup to get clear. I will make an enquiry myself in a few weeks about going through on my bike as the bike ban may only be while there are still a lot of residential, supply, rebuild and emergency traffic wanting to get through. I note on the application form though to get through at the moment they are saying nothing about motorcycles not being allowed only bicycles but they also ask what your reason is for going and they have not included "just to visit" which in a week when the bulk of emergency, supply and residential traffic has gone through they need to do in order to keep the businesses going.
Took an early 7am squirt up to Cheviot today, had a coffee and back home on the 'Busa about 9.15 when I left Cheviot . Magic ride no traffic to speak of and perfect road and weather ( zoom ). Noticed a heavy truck convoy coming North including STMS vehicles and a few container trucks ( empty ) with Hi-lifts obviously readying for the re-opening of the road to Kaikoura today ..

Latest update is unrestricted access on the inland road, and shortly unrestricted daylight access on SH1 south of Kaikoura.

No mention of bikes not allowed.....
