1) opening a door so as to cause a hazard to traffic is illegal as fuck.
2) if your "boot isn't closed properly" it's probably able to be classed as an insecure load. also illegal as fuck.
somebody should do something!

Lane splitting or filtering
While you might see other riders lane splitting or 'filtering' this is not a technique that you should use until you are experienced. Lane splitting is where you can ride between vehicles that are moving slowly or are stationary.
A motorcycle may overtake a vehicle on the right within the same lane if it is safe to do so. The traffic must be stationary or slow-moving and the way ahead must be clear. A motorcycle may overtake a vehicle on the left only if that vehicle is stationary or if it is turning right. It must not overtake on the left if the vehicle is turning left.
Therefore when traffic is stationary at the lights you can lane split on either side; if traffic is moving slowly on the motorway then you must only lane split to the right of a lane. Stick within 20kph or so of the speed of the other traffic otherwise you will likely be stopped and charged with careless driving or dangerous driving, both which carry a substantial fine.
You must not ride down the extreme right of the motorway outside the line. Also you must not ride in the hard shoulder unless it's a transit lane.
Remember that as a motorcyclist you can use bus lanes where indicated, and these are likely to be safer than lane splitting because there will be a bigger margin.
Be careful when filtering through traffic that is stationary at traffic lights because pedestrians could be walking between cars.

Yes I know those rules by heart!
I was meaning more so car drivers knew that lane splitting was legal to start with. Then worry about the details later.
You ask most car drivers they will say it's illegal as you don't have 100M of clear road throughout the overtaking manoeuvre. (Despite that being an incorrect interpretation of the rules)
So for him to comment he must be a mate?
Sort of... a Facebook "friend" not a real friend. I'm in a band so get lots of randoms adding me on Facebook. I usually just accept them.

Moderation is the key. Watching people split at speed past cars that are already travelling at more than a crawl looks dangerous and often scares people who are unaware your coming. If I see a gap in one of the lanes ahead I assume someone will change lanes into it without indicating and its the lane changer that gets you hurt. We all know riding is risky but sometimes a little common sense increases or chances of survival.
Bus or transit lanes on the left is a big danger when someone not in that lane wants to turn or park and has not seen you because they look quickly for a bus and you have not been spotted.
99.9% of wellington traffic will even give you room to go through. There is always going to a couple that wont or even try prevent you. Watch out for them. You also need calculate the human era and drivers that are not paying any attention(auto pilots and phone zombies). Even if your not in the wrong your still going to get hurt.
Saying that idd be TEMPTED to slow impact that f@#%s door off its hinge limit with 400kg of M109r. Disclaimer ---- "Not intentionally if that actually happened".
I have evolved as a KB member. Now nothing I say should be taken seriously.
TOP QUOTE: “The problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people’s money.”
I have heard a lot of people say they would do this, or even one guy claim that a mate of his does it and knocks motorcyclists off "all the time". When I point out that a 200+ Kg motorcycle is going to right royally fuck your door even if it is moving slowly the story usually changes.
People are full of shit most of the time.
Of course I do encounter people moving over to close up the gap when I am filtering almost every time I ride. If you keep an eye out it is not that big a deal, and most overestimate the size of their car and leave enough room to get past anyway, or the person in the lane next to them wonders what the hell they are doing so move over and open the gap.
It is surprising how many non riders do dislike the idea though. I try to be sensible when filtering, keep the speed down, and always acknowledge anybody that moves over to give me a little more room.
Back in the '80's ... a guy tried that on me on the Hutt motorway near Lower Hutt. He was still rolling about 20 km/hr ... and I was passing about 30 km/hr. He had a stiff southerly behind him as he was heading to Upper Hutt. The wind did some damage as the wind pulled the door out of his hand. But the Suzuki GS1000 flattened the door against his front mudguard. No damage to the bike.
I bet he never tried it again.
