Looks like the new wee scoot is in need of a rear tyre.
Its wearing a Dunlop 903 which is probably orignal
What's the recommendation for a DR-Z250 being used primarily for commuting and some gravel roads?

On my KDX I'm using shinko 705's to commute from Akaroa to CHCH most days, they are good both on gravel and seal, wouldn't rate them in mud however.
If you want more agressive tyres I found the michellin AC 10 to be a good offroad tyre that happens to be road legal, plus I got 8000 km's out of them on my KLX 250.
The 805's aren't to bad in mud and very good on gravel, they were almost as well wearing as the 705's as well
Not too worried about mud - this bike is used mostly for road and for a little light adventure riding.

Rosie quite likes the Bridgestone TW302 on her WR250R for that sort of use. Lasts well but still hooks up nicely on gravel.

We have Shinko 705's on the DT 230, rear is a 4.10. I'm very happy with them on tar seal and gravel. The skinny rear cuts through the loose stuff quickly and hooks up well. They grip well enough on tar seal to make keeping up with the DT on twisty roads hard work! Great wear, too, on the wee bike. Over all, excellent value IMHO.

I like MT21s. Aggressive and dont last long, but good off-road and in shingle. I currently have some Scorpion MX take-offs on there and they have been suprisingly good and long lasting! Not a tyre you would want to push on the road however!
Heidenau Scouts consistently get good reviews.
Just a thought.

Of course this mega thread: https://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/s...-and-off-road) has quite a few suggestions.
In some ways I wish I got the shinko 805's or 244's for the KDX instead of the 705's, but having grip on the Akaroa Highway is a good thing I guess.
Interestingly the 705 did fairly well up Goat Rock road in the dry, which was hard packed dirt and rocks with a steepish incline.
Another option a bit like the Heidenau Scout, is the Mitas EO-7. Both of these are renowned for being really hard wearing, a good gravel/tarmac compromise, but the hard compounds do make them a bit skittery in the wet.
Cheers

Shinko 700... good 50/50 tyre...

90% of all Harleys built are still on the road... The other 10% made it back home...
Ducati... Makeing riders into mechaincs since 1964...
So...
In answer to my own question.
Shinko 705's are the go.
Been playing around on the commute, and wandered today from Port Levy to Pigeon Bay
Well impressed, well pleased, recommended...
