Falls into the same category as "rego", "ambo", "garbo"...

Depends on which ones you use. Our local Mobil is manned by a single person and they are always polite to us. Others have forecourt attendants...

Done, I was informed, as part of the state's employment policies - and fuel prices in Oregon, as of last Oct, were no more expensive than B.C., Washington State or California - and they all have self-serve.

My father used to talk of going to the "petrol station" and pulling up beside the correct "bowser" and filling the car with "benzine", even though the gauge read "Petrol"...

    That's still the case.
Gas (petrol for you down under types) in Oregon is generally a few cents a gallon higher than the national average.

Well, you were wrongly informed. It's a law dating from 1951 related to having only trained station workers putting Class 1 flammable goods into vehicles.

When I was there a few years ago it was more expensive, enough that people from Oregon were moaning.

I certainly enjoyed it there though, Bend in particular with the rivers, lakes and mountains. Despite the rain, the sunshine hours are really high too, about the same as Nelson over here.
