Learner carpark training

Hi all,

There has been some talk in another thread about putting on a learner training session at a vacant parking lot.

I for one would be more than happy to help organise this but will need to hear of ideas from any interested members as to the Where, When, What and how.

I'm hoping there will be some "racing" types interested as they will have some excellent input I'm sure. (Dave) ???

I'm guessing this will be a very very basic road handling skills type class covering things like

Hill starts,
Cornering,
Braking,
dealing with traffic and weather conditions e.t.c.

I think it's important to establish straight away that this will be put together by Non-professionals, so don't expect the sort of superior education you might get from a "proper" motorcycle handling organisation. Although it would be free of course.

So lets begin the chit chat and get this thing underway.

If you are using an area that is accessible to/by the general public you will need permission from the owner/local council and also (if you gain their consent) clearly identify that the area is being used for motorcycle training (enter at your own risk, etc).

The people participating in the course need to be made aware that they are doing this of their own volition, that they need to take responsibility for their own health and welfare (and insurance). If they clip/injure/kill anybody associated with the course or their kit then you may have some issues to contend with.

This is similar territory to that traversed by people who want to organise bike or foot races on public roads. Be aware of what you may be getting into...

Perhaps I should draw up a simple disclaimer note and get evryone to sign it before we start. (all care no responsibility)

that the public have vehicle access to "BY right or Not" is classed as a road.
Even your own drive way - a traffic cop can follow you onto your property and issue a ticket. Which is why drive way accidents are classified as part of the road toll.

The points Hitcher makes are all very relevant and are the reason why excellent initiatives like this often fail to get off the ground. But we should not be deterred - I for one would be happy to support it and I am sure we would get enough Auckland bikers (and some out of towners) to take part. Combine some tuition/skills practice with an easy ride somewhere later...

However if you would read the first part of this thread you will see that this is not a "Racing" class but a very very basic road handling class. I suggested someone of a racing background would be good to have along as they tend to be quite competent riders on the road.

I'm deffintely NOT suggesting we show learners how to pull wheelies and get their knee down at a crowded supermarket carpark!! (That will be next week)

In all honesty - you would be better to arrange it for one of the next track days than a car park.

Car Parks are notoriously devoid of corners, normal traffic conditions etc...

Either that or hire the track - but I think it makes more sense to run in on the track.....the situation is more controlled - their is a tow truck there....

Hi Duckman

The more training and help a biker can get has to beneficial. I for one am keen especially if you can rope in some of the more experienced riders off here that can give a view of the 'been there done that' kind of scenarios.

As for the OSH thing...blah blah blah ! If it is a few mates getting together in a carpark with no money changing hands it is outside their jurisdiction. The ideal would be if anyone here works for a company that has a large staff carpark....ie not accessible to the public on weekends

I have always shied away from track days because I am scared I wont be able to keep up and look like a plonker. But what you are suggesting is basic handling techniques...Good for you!

Have we all become so concerned with OSH and being PC that we would miss a great opportunity to learn and have some fun with fellow bikers?

I may have a carpark we can use but it is a private company so I would need to know how many you would have and how big a size space you need.

PS: I can also organise tow truck, fire brigade, band aids and St Johns if you really feel the need

This sounds like a great idea. I'll put my hand up as student number 2. New to auckland so don't have any brilliant ideas about place or anything but name the time and place and i'll be there to support it. I can assist with first aid if required.

Listening to some of the above comments, I would like to make it really clear that this is targetted at NOVICE riders. It's an opportunity for the learner riders to get some ride knowledge without worrying about cars, buses, trucks e.t.c. running them off the road.
It's also a chance for some of the experienced riders to give back to the biker community.

So - if your looking for some basic tuition or are available to spend half a day showing some newbies how it's done then make it known on this thread and we'll get this thing going !!!
