Yamaha Virago 250/400 compared to Suzuki GN250

Hi everybody

I have looked at the GN250 for a while and have read about the Virago 250.

My Question is: Are those bikes compareable? How do they differ in terms of:

- Performance
- Handling
- Economy
- Sound
- Comfort
- Reliability
- And price?

I have found this on trade me http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/a...250&permanent= could this be a rip off or just a real bargain?

Any input is appreciated

I have a Virago 250 and I have owned mine for over 5 years.
- Performance - great top speed $1.30 but prefer 100 to 110.
- Handling - fantastic
- Economy - real cheap to run - 9.5 litre tank.
- Sound - quiet as
- Comfort - blardy comfortable seat.
- Reliability - hell yes
- And price? - depending on what year you buy.

I just took a look at the bike... its a Virago 400cc and a 1991 with 26,000km on the clock.
It hasnt been used much (fair weather rider) and that looks a good bargin..
The bike is a tad taller than the 250cc.

My bike is a 97 model with 69,000km on the clock... which means that I ride my bike a lot.

The price on that bike is just the start bid.
Could go higher than that.
Their a nice bike,even the 250 is cut above the GN,imho.

it's within about $400 of the reserve now - i'd say it's still a pretty good buy at that price

hmm i couldn't find a quote for the virago 250. does anyone know how much they go for in new zealand?

new they are around $6995

second hand they can start from $2000 for the really older models.
but most are around $3500 - but more closer to $4500

CaN has his Virago 250 on sale for about $5700 I think..
but its a 2004 model with low kms on it.

I bought a new one last weekend.
$7000 including on road costs.

I loved to tel you that its a great bike .. but it has rainging heavily everyday since I bought it

The GN is a good cheap bike and there are still heaps around (altho they are starting to get less and older and I hear the newer ones are less reliable but that is just heresay), but I think the virago is definately the better bike now. A few years ago they were too expensive as a first bike, and there were stuff all around. Now if i was getting my first bike I would probably go for the Virago over the GN.
I had a GN as my first bike...it was good, fun, and easy to ride and maintain and very forgiving ...my second bike was a Virago but the 750 (vastly different to the smaller models). Didn't even know they made a 400 Virago, but this one looks pretty good especially for the price.
So I have now seen 250, 400, 535, 750 and 1100 versions of the Virago ...and I think? there is a 900 or similar as well
