I don't thin there's provision in the regulations for anyone to ride without a helmet, even Sikhs have to take off their turban and don a helmet (here in NZ).

And on what grounds would not wearing a helmet be allowed for a ride against male violence? I can't think of any link between reducing male violence and not wearing a motorcycle helmet. Other than Brian Tamaki's face was identifiable for the media photos.

So if someone, presumably in high office in the Police, authorised an exemption for Brian Tamaki to ride without a helmet on a public road, the questions must be asked - who and why?

Maybe it was approved by some heathen who wanted maximum damage when they push a stick through his spokes...

But seriously I don't think the police have to "approve", they just need to "decide not to do anything". A bit like letting us filter on the motorway.

A couple of years ago I happened to see a hearse go by with a large escort of patched up gang members, many of them without helmets. They also had a police escort. I guess that was a case of "pick your battles"...

Sikhs have a helmet exemption up to 50 kmh.

Re helmet exemptions. There are medical exemptions. For such things as diagnosed claustrophobia.

The police will always earn more respect for using discretion, then for blindly fining everything and everybody all the time. .

Hope it will catch on a bit....
