    My Message from Pakistan

Pretty upsetting about the Earthquake, I emailed my contact in Pakistan yesterday.
I thought a few of you may be interested in the reply.

    I quote

    Dear Bret,

Thanks for sharing our grief, dear God save our area and our lives and there is very high scale level of earthquake here but the God took pity of us and prevent our area and the time of horrible moments is short here approximate one minute and that time we feel that our floors are going up and roof come down ,however our homes didn't affected by this by the grace of Allah and wasn't affected more from this great disastrous and beside this our surrounding provinces and areas are somewhere totally swallowed by earth and there is no any house which remain save and we cannot calculate the exact amount of dead people yet because in some areas it is very difficult to take action immediately due to danger of reattach and you cannot believe that it is expected that one of our province which have 14 villages which was entirely finished and it is also expected that it is the biggest disastrous even then sonami disastrous because in that areas the amount of dead people will reach to approximate half million or more.

    Thanks again dear.

God give the patience to our countries people.

A 7.6 scale quake is bad news in whatever perspective.

I hope everyone pulls through ok.

Sorry to hear that Quasi mate. Its bad when something happens like that and worse when you know them. Hope everything starts to take a turn for the better.

Glad your contact is ok. I think that in this fortunate country we struggle to comprehend what it would be like to be involved in a disaster like this. The numbers of dead and injured are just mind boggling.

A few bucks in the direction of Red Cross or other aid agencies is something positive we can all do.

Thanks for sharing that Quasi. It is easy to think that *these* countries 'deserve' this sort of thing, but not so easy to appreciate that most likely all the dead & injured are no different from any of us, just going about their daily lives.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

It could happen in Wellington. At any time. Imagine not knowing where your friends, family and loved ones were.

I understand where youre coming from, but people that think like that are brainless and mindless fools and represent the Non thinking population of the western world, they are the people that I despise and pity.

Not I. Your post is a timely reminder to those that may, that countries like Pakistan are not full of Muslim terrorists.. Hitcher as usual puts it most succinctly.

FFS mate, quit while you are ahead. Just because they speak a language you can't understand, have a different religion and a different skin colour than you does not make this any less tragic than if it had happened here.

Sent a message of concern off to Umer at Bel when I heard about the quake. Luckily they are all fine, as they are a long way south of the epicentre. Quasi it sounds like your contact was a hell of a lot closer and they clearly consider themselves lucky to still have a roof over their head. As Hitcher said- this can happen here at any time, and sooner or later it WILL happen. Imagine being surrounded by a city of collapsed buildings full of the dead and dying, and having nothing more than your bare hands to try and dig them out.

Whenever major quakes are reported here I always detect a certain smugness from our media and some authorities- kind of like "look at their shitty buildings and the way they collapsed. OUR buildings are much better built so we'll be fine." Horseshit! Our cities are full of buildings that were built long before engineering for eathquake loads was ever though of. They WILL come down, and so will a lot of newer buildings. The Japanese have found this, as have the Americans and the Turks.
