Hasn’t anyone else noticed the ‘temporary’ limit of 80, during roadworks on a 100 kph road, suddenly becomes permanent.

Yes, just saw our politicians on TV explaining how the extra 10c tax will result in a lower road toll.

Maybe we should tax It like cigarettes and tobacco? At the same rate.

Err aren’t we already doing that?

Yep.. in 1973 the speed limit was 80km/h and that years road toll was a record 843. In 1985 the speed limit was raised to 100km/h and the road toll dropped to 747. Therefore showing a 20km/h raising of the speed limit saved almost 100 lives. We could further reduce the road toll by raising the limit further.
If only it were that simple. A lot of things have changed and led to the decrease in fatalities, not just the speed limit.

The old speed excuse, maybe some attention to impatience and fucwits, maybe more traffic may assist?

yes and last year they were desparately short of people dying on the roads so included a m/c racer who died at a closed road street race event over that weekend, media hype, there are a few normal two day weekends that have this score during the year, i think we did well this easter

Well there's a thing. Cars have got better and roads have got better but the drivers? Not so much. It was interesting that the PM actually acknowledged on the news last night that there are factors other than speed involved.
    Quite radical really. /sarc

There is a limit to the roading changes though, we've got a lot of roads for the size of the population.

Things might well have changed since I was there, but back then achieving 60kph would have been a minor miracle.

Sadly not. We have the leftist / eco-mentalist approach of "saving the planet" through greenhouse taxes, carbon taxes, etc, so we will see more push for this sort of thing. Get used to cycling to work while wearing your hemp-based suit.

Word on TV this morning was the 70km speed limit paper release is a decoy to take the heat off the 12c per l fuel increase.

Saw the PM struggling with this subject this morning. I was happy to give her a go, but of late I find her increasingly unconvincing in her position as party leader and PM.

I don't give a F about Womans Weekly articles or the young family that have just purchased her house for 1.2 million.

Why did you bother to quote me when your response was so far off the point. Or do you have a local council who actually spend money on the "local roads" ?

its easy money for a govt, just increase by 12 cents !! We already pay about 98 cents in tax for every litre. don't read too much fake news, it just pisses you off.

What pisses me off about the media beat up on petrol price is that the Auckland specific fuel tax doesn't even bring Auckland prices up to South Island norms.
I'm all in favour of Auckland prices going up - they can subsidise the rest of the country thanks.

Hard being in Government, everyone complains when you appear to do nothing, then complains when you do as it has a cost.

What passes as a Media don't help, making lead stories out of nothing.

I'm happy to pay an extra tax if they can reduce the congestion. Maybe a huge tax on new/used imported cars.
DeMyer's Laws - an argument that consists primarily of rambling quotes isn't worth bothering with.
