Wire strung between two trees in Woodhill Forest, rider injured.

Anyone have any inside info on this:

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/a...ectid=12059998

"A man is lucky to be alive after riding a motorbike into a wire that was strung up between two trees in Woodhill Forest.."

"...the wire hit Vaughan at the top of his shoulders and his throat"

"...the incident appeared to be an accident and there was no further police action being taken."

Other than absolute unusual circumstances, stringing up a wire between two trees at neck height, were you know there are a lot of dirt bike riders riding, does not seem like an "accident".

Yes, I got some inside information, from a former school mate, which may or may not be true.

They called it 'Karma', as apparently the guy was targeted, as he is a bad egg and was up to no good.

As I said, this may or may not be true. There may have been a genuine reason. Hope he is OK.

Wasn't there something similar on Old North Road a little while back?

FAKE NEWS is the best kind of news and generally closer to the truth than the so called 'Real News'

Not commenting at you, rather just on what you may have heard/been told. This incident sounds deliberate. Whether he was a bad egg or not, it could have been fatal. Also, even if he was the target for whatever reason, justified, or not, such a "payback" trap is lethal and also open to anyone being the victim. Utterly messed up thing to do. If indeed this was deliberate, it's equally messed up that the police is classifying it as an accident and not investigating further.

Sounds like the perfect place for Herald and Stuff reporters, what with the furtively lurking wires of doom, just waiting to pounce on them.
Down here we ride into things.

Sounds pretty incredible. Must be more to it than meets the eye.

I'm with you on this one, I saw the report yesterday and it sounds like don't ride into a fence line, although I have to admit that my first reaction was to think it was a deliberate trap (nothing like a good conspiracy).
I've been riding at Woodhill for over 10 years and never managed to ride into a fence yet, although there are a lot around the park, you just have to keep your eyes open and engage your brain. I have however witnessed a lot of accidents at trail rides, trees jumping out in front of people, bikes breaking riders legs, collar bones snapping on a whim, ribs cracking when attacked by the ground and so on, very rarely is it the riders fault!
Accidents and injury are part of off road riding, I never understand the surprise when it happens.

A mate of mine goes up there from time to time. A month or so ago he knocked off work early and shot up there for a quick thrash.
He told me: "There was a point on the ride, when I was going quite fast, on my back, looking at the sky, as my bike was travelling above me, that I thought: 'Fuck, no-one knows where I am...'

He at least leaves a note for the missus now
High miles, engine knock, rusty chrome, worn pegs...
    Brakes as new

The rest of us have no inside info, other than the report, thanks for some "inside info". I appreciate what you are saying, but if there is any truth to it being (from what the article and the news bulletin on the radio alludes to) a lone wire strung between two trees, it doesn't sound like a deer fence.

Did you read the police comments in the news report?
I took them to say that it was fencing wire and they were taking no further action which indicates it was wire being used as a fence, it is possible that I am mistaken and that it was a deliberate act, but if it's wire strung between two trees off the tracks then who were they trying to get? I don't see this as a deliberate act, the wire would have been over the clearly marked tracks if that was the case and to the best of my knowledge there has never been anything like that occur there.
There is a huge issue with motorcycles riding illegally on Muriwai beach and in the forest, deer poachers in the forest and the odd gang of muppets but all of these issues are addressed by reporting and policing, not by setting traps.

There is a reason we sign a waiver on any off road event, it is because it has it's risks and people need to accept that.
