I don't see this as a deliberate act, the wire would have been over the clearly marked tracks if that was the case and to the best of my knowledge there has never been anything like that occur there.
There is a huge issue with motorcycles riding illegally on Muriwai beach and in the forest, deer poachers in the forest and the odd gang of muppets but all of these issues are addressed by reporting and policing, not by setting traps.

There is a reason we sign a waiver on any off road event, it is because it has it's risks and people need to accept that.
Yes, I read the police report and also heard it on the radio. I would think common fencing wire would be the perfect wire to use if you were sick enough to set such a trap. It sounds like he went out of the bike park, yes, if true, he was wrong to do that, but there's no excuse for setting traps like this (if indeed it was a trap). The radio report alluded to it being a trap. I don't think a rider (especially if he was riding illegally) would have made the news getting himself caught up in a deer fence. I would hazard a guess and go off the deer fencing I have seen, that you wouldn't normally put up a deer fence using trees for various reasons.
Sorry, but not ALL of the issues are dealt with via reporting and policing.
