    Proof of ownership

Hi. I'm getting ready to buy my first motorbike in NZ from a private owner - the bike does not have rego (off-road only). Do I get anything that shows me being the new owner? I am going to have the owner sign a note basically stating he is receiving payment for that specific motorbike, but is there nothing "official" that comes with it? I did do a VIN check here: http://www.police.govt.nz/stolenwanted/stolen-vehicles and it came up clean.
In general, is possession 90% of ownership (for non-rego-ed bikes)?
    Thanks

All I've done in the past is get a signed receipt from the seller with the frame number as proof of having legally purchased.
