I knew a guy a few years back who had purchased several ex USA insurance write offs - late model sport bikes with cosmetic damage, bars, levers - usual shit that gets hurt on the way down the road. Very cheap - all parts to replace ex USA as well and then run through VIN process in NZ and a god bike is legal.

Only one caught him out - due to a scratch on the frame it had to be certified as straight before it would get a VIN number.

Same shit happens with written off vehicles in NZ. You can go to insurance auctions every month - all vehicles are de-reged by the insurance company (they claim back the un-used rego cost).

Did you read the article? if you did, youd know as much as anyone else does.
Bottom line, a dealer has legal obligations around disclosure when selling a vehicle, and they failed on those obligations.

In NZ sometimes they dont even de-reg them - if the insurance co. know the cosmetic damage makes it uneconomical to repair at agreed trade rates, but its relatively straight forward for a back-yarder to fix themselves, they'll sometimes leave them registered, knowing that doing this increases the resale value of the 'wreck'.

Or they reach a settlement with the owner who then repairs the bike.

pretty sloppy work by the dealer, no CIN card given, pretty shoddy,

also they said in the article that he wanted to reduce the refund due to the KM's travelled, the act does not work like that, its full refund of purchase price,

And when the council fail to put that on the LIM ? Actual case - next door to us.

If I'd been involved with this bike, I'd have recommended putting it through a new WOF if there were any doubts about it's compliance.
That removes any issues from the buyer's opinion to solid independent fact.
