I am sort of relaxed about this except: a lot of the time the cost of shipping is half the cost of the order, and I dont so much mind the 15%, but I hate the added levies when stuff gets stopped at the border here. Hopefully that won't be an issue with these changes.

Be interesting to see how it works in practice. Will Ebay or Amazon control the GST payment for their sellers? Otherwise small sellers won't bother.

Examples are interesting with many lower.

At the end of the day I will do the numbers as I do now and make a decision. Simple.

I was an early adopter of Ebay, partly financed my European Kombi trip in 2002.
Its shit these days flooded with crap and Ebays restrictive T's and C's with Global Shipping.
I can't really support Amazon when you read about the conditions of their 'fulfillment center" and their dickensian working conditions.
We seem to be in a race to the bottom, cheap shit being sold by greedy corporates exploiting the working class.

Saying that I buy all my bike parts off a few privately owned companies in the US, UK and Germany.
If there was a shop in Auckland that sold classic bike parts without silly prices I'd shop there, but Experience BMW....

I like to support local but sometimes distributors make it too hard. I wanted a set of the new Cardo units. Most NZ outlets couldn’t even tell me when they would have them available. I ended up buying from a Dutch company with an Australian website. 45% cheaper for the same unit and it was delivered in 10 calendar days. No problem with duty.
Wanted footpegs for my wife’s bike, our dealer couldn’t even get a price from a distributor for anything that might fit. Ordered from Revzilla, delivered in less than a calendar week. Again no issue with duty.
Even if if there had been, the extra $$ and time involved would likely have been better than waiting on some of the local importers.
Retail outlets have rarely been the issue for me.

In contrast to this, I have bought a tonne of stuff from 454 lately. I think they are the NZ distributor for a few brands, but you can purchase from them directly (or get them to send it to a local shop that they supply shit to). From my experience, they do a great job as a distributor.

There were a couple particular items that they didn't stock but they added them to their catalogue after my request. Had to wait for the items to be slow shipped to NZ first, but that wasn't really a hassle. Still haven't put them on the bike, and probably won't till winter.

Things that you buy from them, that are in stock, ship pretty much straight away and are to your door really quickly. The only issue is they don't send you a tracking number. (and I had the same shitty courier that didn't bother ringing the doorbell 2 days in a row, but my latest order was delivered by a different company). From what I comparison priced, they weren't fucking you over either. Revzilla was more expensive, only buying from the manufacturers EU shop directly was better (but they wouldn't sell to NZ).
