    Unhappy Speedo slipping HELP ME PLEASE

    hi there, i would have posted this in the newbie thread if i wasnt asking a question

    i have a '88 Honda VTZ250 (blue/grey) (yes its my first bike) and my bro says that the speedo on it is slipping and wont go above 70 km/h (ive barely ridden it as its in his name and i dont have insurance yet)

    any ways ive pulled everything apart, checked the cable, checked the connectors and checked the speedo (tho still not sure on that) and havnt found anything worng. so i pulled the front wheel off and took the brake disc off it but now im stuck as i cant figure out what to do next as i dont have/cant find a manual for it.

    any ideas? also any tips/suggesstions on insurance is appreciated.

    Bit unusual. Nylon drive gears in the hub may be worn. Each end of cable should be a square section, check the fit into gear & dial is reasonably firm. If it isn't any of that, then the speedo itself must be faulty.
    Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

    by hub im guessing you mean inside of the wheel which ive been trying to get apart, ive had the speedo off before but i will go check it again right now

    make sure that the inner cable spins freely within the outer, and as mstrs said, the ends should both be square, if they have rounded off it would slip.

    checked the joins on both ends of the cables, they appear to be fine so i pulled the whole speedo(dash) unit off so i can look at it inside.

    I don't know exactly what the setup is like on this bike but... at the wheel end o f the cable does it plug into some kind of housing at the centre of the hub? In any case it's probably driven off the wheel rotating around the spindle through the middle of the wheel. There is usually some kind of spacer between the speedo drive housing and the hub which should have a couple of protruding metal tabs which lock into the speedo gears to make it spin as the wheel does. The metal tabs on the spacer can wear down and also maybe bent or flattened slightly limiting the speedo's effectiveness - basically it will 'slip' instead of constantly driving the speedo gears.

    To get the speedo housing off you'll need to undo the spindle bolt... if it's setup like that???

    Perhaps you're able to post a picture or two?

    Hope that makes some sense.

    Price a new cable dude somethings fishy there. Is the cable accurate up to 70?

    sorry vase but the cable looks in good condition.

    i think groinz has got it with the speedo housing on the wheel (i was thinking the same thing) however im not sure how to get at it. all i have is the wheel without the brake disc or speedo cable attached, i cant get any further than that. sorry but whats a spindle bolt?

    the alxe through the middle looks as if it might unscrew but ive tried with a little force so as not to break it and it didnt budge.

    also there is a very thin hole about 1-2 mm in diameter through the middle of the axle, prehaps that could be the key?

    sorry but i cant get any pics tonight so ill do them after work 5:30ish tommorow
