Bet no one reading this thread will forget to do up their helmet (not saying that it was necessarily the case in this instance).

ok just to clear things up before this becomes another "fucking cage drivers" thread.
I have just been told from my father that a guy at his work (that i used to work with) knows the person that was driving the car (his mates g/f).
Her story is that the bike was off in the distance, eg a fair way back from the intersection hence why she went to turn across.
Now something for you to think about is that there were no skid marks...
My assumption is that this guy was way over the 50kmh designated speed for a start, she pulls across, he either didnt react fast enough and slow down to the speed limit, or was very good with the brakes and didnt manage to lock it up. Then as we know she doesnt make it across in time, he T bones her car and does the superman thing etc etc...
Having just completed the Defensive Driving course you have to keep two things in mind without having been there... HOW fast was this dude going, how much room did the cage driver have (eg could she have waited)..im not gonna debate either.
Either way it is very sad that it happened, we all know that we need to take it easy in residential areas and this is precisely why - if you are in a 50kmh zone, other road users think you are doing 50kmh not 80,100,120... or wateva so they judge you at 50kmh not the speed you are doing.
RIP to the dude, and condolences to his family and friends... on the other side i feel sorry for the girl too as she has to live with "i killed someone" for the rest of her life, not to mention having to see a guy who hit the ground head first at XXXkmh after going over her bonnet.

It's better to not pass and know that you could have than to pass and find out that you can't. Wait for the straight.
Not really a comment on this particular case, but unfortunately for motorcyclists, human vision is susceptible to something called the size illusion. Put simply, a small object may appear further away than it really is, and motorcycles are significantly smaller than cars in frontal area. Therefore the driver may "see" a bike as being a long distance away, whereas a car would be seen as being much closer at the same real distance.Originally Posted by gareth_d
There are also issues of how a viewer processes a visual scene. Depending on an object and its background, an item may "pop-out" of the background, or may require a directed visual search to be seen. If you and your motorcycle don't pop-out for whatever reason, it's likely the driver is telling the truth when they say that they didn't see you...
One of the first things a cager says after an bike accident is "he must have been speeding". I heard that so many times I was heartily sick of it.
The fact remains that the driver turning has to ascertain it is safe to do so. This driver didn't and someone is dead.
There is no excuse.
Speed doesn't kill people.
Stupidity kills people.
