As for the tone of the original post...who gives a toss...there is something to be learned from most situations whether they be serious or taking the mickey! Lots of people relate better to humour.

It stimulated conversation on safety and the importance of gear...so that's all good in my book!

Ive seen that guy!! he was coming down Lincon Road, heading onto the motorway .. I thought it was just a once off thing cause it was a stinking hot day, that was over 2 months ago.. then I hear this. Wonder what goes through his head.. totally beyond me.

Well i saw, an ugly paintjob, not to mention exhaust pipe! on what would otherwise be a nice bike. it was one of those new ones, i think they call them a GSXR600? K6 or some catchy catch name like that. If only the rider in a T shirt was on this thing, could could have shown him the error in his ways on both accounts.

Ok People, serious question here...

what is the practical safety difference between someone riding a 12-speed bicycle at 50 to 70km/hr wearing bike shoes, shorts, shirt fingerless gloves and a lid helmet...

and a motorcyclist riding at 50 to 70km/hr wearing sneakers jeans a T-shirt no gloves and a full face helmet?

I'd genuinely like to know what you all think, reason being no one thinks twice about the first scenario, but every one is aghast at the second.

The speeds are the same here, but the motorcyclist has jeans, a full face helmet better brakes and more rubber on the road, so isn't he/she better protected in some respects? Granted the motorcycle weighs more hence more inertia but then there's engine braking too.

What do you all think?

perhaps I could start a one man (person/humanlike simian) crusade for the wearing of full gear. I could lurk at the lights, leap out at bikers and give them an all-over battering with a 4x2. Those able to get up and give chase pass the standard. Those who don't will be told "That was for your own good".

I have exactly the same discussion with a mate who rides a bicycle to work. He wears micron thick lycra, bare legs and forearms, fingerless gloves and a piece of polystyrene on his head, reaches at least 50km/h, passes on the left, rides home in the dark and tells me that motorbikes are dangerous!?

I commute in jeans and have done since 1977, yet I have somehow survived?

While we're on it, isn't there a bit of hypocrisy in all the criticism of the boy-racer type who was recently convicted based on the now-infamous video clip, when many of the discussions on this site centre around wheelies, stoppies, and warp speeds?

What, you suggesting motorcycle riders weigh more than cyclists?

I presume you mean a motorcycle has more momentum, but that has little to do with what the rider is wearing unless it lands on top of them!

Protective gear is just that, it protects you. It doesn't make you a safer rider or help you avoid accidents. It is the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.

It was the latest line of Champion T-Shirt.
The "thug-ness" provides all the protection. Bulletproof even, havent tried it myself, but the kids wearing them think they are fist AND bullet proof with their hipping and hopping.
