Why have all of 70 km/h limits been replaced by 60 limits in Auckland?

The thread title says it all. They've let me out the last few weeks, and I have not seen a single 70 km/h limit witinin the Auckland Council boundary.

Now I'm barely old enough to remember, but 70 km/h is the closest to the old 40 mph speed limit. So after all of these years, why drop this to 60 km/h? Do lots of people get killed in 70 km/h limits, or am I missing something?

I was out in the Scenic Drive, Bethels and Waitakere area yesterday, still have the 70kph limits around there.

TPTB don’t like 10km/h changes in speed limits any more so the way things are going are 40km/h in urban areas, 60 in those fringe areas (and on unsealed roads) and 80 on rural roads with the occasional 90 thrown in to the mix.

No new 70’s are allowed (although that is now under review) so if they are reviewed they become 60 or 80, and no council is going to raise the speed limit.

It’s the way of the future and lucky for you Auckland are at the forefront.

Speed kills - we should have a 20kph speed limit for the entire country. Sure, the economy would be crippled - but there wouldn't be many deaths on the road (just a few deaths from boredom).

Just had to navigate past both ways on our far north ride.

Very little chance of breaking the speed limit. We all swore the next time we go near Auckland on a bike would have to be at 4am only.

It's not the death rate at those speeds ... it's the injury rate at those speeds.

A head-on with both vehicles traveling at 60 km/hr ... 120 km/hr impact speed.



Can't be that bad ... right .. ??
