A Ute manages to wrap itself around a post in Auckland this weekend. Whilst announcing this on tonight's bulletin those news merchants at Newshub lead with the headline 'And with further proof that speed really does kill'.

Really??? This all before the results of any meaningful investigation could possibly have been known and yet here we are with a national news agency telling us how this is further proof of the fatally flawed theory around Speed being the root of all evil.

I can only surmise that this is further proof of a Government/NZTA-led narrative being forced down our collective throats that suits their agenda on this front.

Unbelieveable.

Can anybody tell me the speed limit in this location .. ?? I'm guessing not 100 km/hr.

Perhaps ... 4WD utes are not as safe as some might believe. And colliding with any sort of pole at the drivers door is not advisable at any time.

Just had a look at the area on the map. It has sure changed since I rode up there on my push bike on the way to high School. Then again, that was over half a century ago.

I've never understood the appeal of hooning around city streets. In my mind, why do 100 in a 50 when I could already do 100 legally elsewhere? That's my mindset at least.

Surely though, the reality is that the speed limit was irrelevant to the crash. People hooning in cars are not influenced by speed limits, more likely by drugs or alcohol or maybe just inexperience?

My point precisely. It appears as though the person wasn't paying attention to the limit or indeed any other factors prevalent at the time. So - Poor decision making perhaps?

The mnemonic used by Police is RIDS if memory serves correct, as in what they focus on when doing 3R or 3T, hoping it doesn't turn into 5X.

Seems like a simple list of things to hone in on, yet if an impaired driver is distracted by his phone whilst not wearing a seatbelt, then crashes...the only factor speed plays is how big the mess becomes

Yes our media deals in high grade fear porn and over simplified messages. It’s pretty hard to do a headline describing camber of Road and current friction co efficient...

Step one for staying alive in any vehicle is to admit your current chosen potential impact velocity IS the most important input value in the current real time calculation of your life expantancy.

Because if you deny it’s relevance you won’t compensate in your own subconscious decision making that your doing ( or should START doing) every micro second of your journey.

When I accidentky end up travelling above posted speed limits I recalculate my go or no go decision parameters, I’ll observe a slower motorist a bit longer before deciding if an overtake is on.
You have to remember all road safety laws are set around the lowest common denominator. You may very well be able to travel at speed safely and have a flash vehicle with good brakes etc....
But you don’t get to choose when you end up interacting with a sub standard driver in a substandard vehicle on a substandard road in less than ideal conditions, only the reaper decides who wins then if no one changes their behaviour.

Btw I saw raw footage of that’s crash scene via a media channel and it’s quite clear that’s ute had a VERY significant impact with the pole.

The driver might have been "Hooning" under the speed limit .. ??

And it hit the Traffic Light pole (Sideways) on the vehicles side centerpost ... hard enough to push it into the cab area at least half a meter ... but speed wasn't a factor .. ???

If the driver had his/her seatbelt on ... they would have been pinned to that centerpost.

Perhaps ... if the vehicle hit that Traffic light at a lesser speed ... they might have survived the prang.

if the wider road was anything above 50km'h then the side street would have a 50km/h sign on entry, seems there's none there so it's a 50km/h roads
