    Average speed cameras

There is a warning sign on Nelson St in Auckland that an average speed camera is operating. It seems a bit pointless given the usual average speed is well below the 40 km/h limit, but no doubt will catch a few early on Sunday mornings!

Interesting to see what they look like.

Notably, those who don't exceed speed limits still don't have anything to fear.

I'll look next time I'm stuck in traffic on Nelson St.

Interesting article and yet another example of poor planning and botched implementation by a government agency.

I'd love to see the business case referred to!

will they catch those pricks that travel at 85 until they get to a passing lane then its 110 and drop back to 85 after the passing lane? as far as im concerned they are a bigger danger than someone doing 5 ks over

That's mostly down to spatial awareness. Pootling along at 85, and voila, the road gets wider, and spatial awareness tells us it's safer to go faster.

People don't speed up to make sure people can't pass. That's urban myth, and we love urban myths. It allows us to hate on people.

And yes, they do cause aberrant overtaking behaviour, which is bad. But most often it's not deliberate.

I suspect Berries was being just a tad ironic.

Pretty sure that when the speed cameras were upgraded to digital recently they all became capable of being 'smart' cameras when the legislation caught up but I guess most (down south at least) are of no use as point to point due to their placement. Would be a good trip if you got pinged by the one in Dunedin and the one in Oamaru.

Once NZTA fully take these cameras on expect them to multiply like rabbits as we journey together on the road to zero.

Ah, that never ending journey to an unreachable destination, whilst lining the pockets of consultants, engineers, advertising account executives and various other bludgers along the way
