Sorry all full up.
I think the lesson is to be aware that it could happen to anyone of us. I owe my life to my wife. It was your bike that saved your life. It mighty have snuck up on you while you slept.
Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.
Most males try to walk it off. Get help.
So slightly unrelated.
September is world Sepsis month.
If you get some infection whether a scratch or something breathed in. And you get sick.
And worse.
Don't try to sleep it off.
Especially if you stop peeing.
Get to ED.
Killed me.
Almost.

Got cellulitis in my elbow while I was up north. Misdiagnosed as an injury at Whangarei Hospital, who sent me away with painkillers. Somehow drove back to Auckland the next morning and was in Auckland ED a few hours later.
Very scary, but it could have been much, much worse.

Yes there's lots of stories like that, and of differing levels. I think it is like 1 in 5 deaths that is what gets them. But hardly anyone knows what it is.

Well, I knew nothing about it despite having done first aid courses for the last 30 years. Seems strange, especially seeing how dangerous it is for babies.

It's as indiscriminate as a car crash for who it strikes.
Farm workers or people in battle (I.e. most people in history) were likely to get cuts. If the infection didn't clear their immune systems out control and that's what killed them.
They didn't have antibiotics so they died. In large numbers.
So now it's only one in 5.
We do but if you don't get it in time or it's misdiagnosed you die.
So don't try to sleep off an infection, or if you get real sick fast or if you stop peeing.
They don't teach sepsis in 1st aid. I've only been doing it 20 years. They've just started covering gun shots.
You've given me an idea. Maybe the Trust can talk to first aid teachers.
Did you see an article in the weekend papers about it?
And back to heart stuff. Don't try to walk it off or sleep it off if you have stabbing pains. But you might not. Sweats that come on and a feeling of dizziness and generally if a male in particular is trying to explain away issues mean there are likely heart issues.
