'Public serpents whose only desire is to sever the public' is a little more accurate

I do like the picture in the stuff article on the subject

Bit of a cockup all round really, it's been circulating for a while that various cameras weren't able to read the black plates, obviously too big a problem to fix so easier to take them off the market.

It seems strange that after the announcement it's still possible to buy them, but a great boost for kiwiplates business.

they've done well lately what with some money from nearly every tesla rebate going to them, and the fact that they represent about 800000 ways to say wanker.

Part of the problem may be the smaller car plates that are available. I saw the silver and black version on a Tesla today, and being smaller and having less contrast, they are more difficult to read than the full size plates.

The only vanity plate I would pay for is unavailable because it has 7 characters "NCC1701" IYKYK

They might get to 7 characters.
If they can get to where no licence agency has gone before.

Why? What are you expecting to do with those?

(Asking for a friend who still has theirs in a folder somewhere and can't seem to throw them out).

Ok, Napier City Council is the first bit and your birthday must be the 17th of January.

And for the bonus point IYKYK make zips.

    Got to be close?

    Done.

If NZTA subsequently decide to make the silver on black illegal, then there could be some interesting liability issues given that they approved them in the first place.

If you fail roadside attitude test this clause could cause grief….

“Obscured or indistinguishable registration plate or licence
    (1)
A person commits an offence if the person operates a motor vehicle by driving or using it on a road if the motor vehicle has affixed to it any registration plate or licence that is in any way obscured, or is rendered or allowed to become not easily distinguishable, whether by night or by day.
    (2)
A person commits a stationary vehicle offence if the person operates a motor vehicle by causing or permitting it to be on a road if the motor vehicle has affixed to it any registration plate or licence that is in any way obscured, or is rendered or allowed to become not easily distinguishable, whether by night or by day.”

As long as the plate was lawfully obtained, mounted in a "proper way" and was not modified, I dont think any Judge would see the funny side.

What i am expecting to happen is for them to say "We are revoking the black with silver and sending you a nice shiny new white reflective one with black free of charge. Free of charge - imagine that?!" And we will all say "But I replaced the shitty white reflective one with black letters because its fucking hideous" and they'll say "Well yeah, tell you what we will go back to those atrocious 300 x 300 square ones that everyone loved so much. And we'll say "three bags full sir"

Number plates are like speed limits - guidelines for the weak minded.
