Steve has planned and don't have GPS routes yet. Next we go lake Waikaremoana, then somewhere else I cant spell with a P near the coast and down a bit. Um poirangahou I think.

Well I've meant to do this for a while. Upgrade clutch springs.
The clutch is the lightest I've ever experienced. Some reports of clutch burning out. Worth fitting the Uncle Wang (yes really) stiffer springs. Supposed to be 20% stronger.
Net result is it is a stiffer pull but still super light.
I leant the bike over just a bit more than sidestand thanks for clue that perhaps I didn't need to lay it over.
Easy swap. New 3Bond.
Springs slightly longer and stiffer. I compressed them against each other in the vice and the new springs were longer than old.
It's not much but glad to have a tickle more pressure when you dump the clutch and want it to bite again.
I had a look at first steel and no sign of bluing.
They gave us another bearing for pressure plate so fitted that as it was in kit.

I starred out from Wairoa thinking of staying there on way to collect wife in Opotiki the next day.
I was on my RF9 and assumed pre Google that maybe it was sealed a lot of the way from that side.
It was not and the RF was not the bike for the job.
Turned back and spent night in Wairoa hut with bike chained to post near door.
Walk into town for food was interesting.![]()

I assumed it was seal as well looking at a paper map, but didn't really care that it wasn't, it rained as well
Wairoa had a shitty feel about it, I stayed long enough to get a pie, gas and go, my brother passed through there some years later on a surf trip, one of the guys with him wouldn't get out of the car
There was very little choice to eat. I stuck my head into a pub come rsa and it was almost like the piano stopped playing, all eyes on me: you not from round here. I pivoted and found some chips on main Rd.
We've stopped at bakery on trips but you leave someone looking after your gear.
Shame but it's not a nice place.
Kaikohe was the same 15odd years ago. You wind up the windows if you have them and don't stop. Either side is just fine.

I haven't been to Wairoa for decades. No reason to go there from Auckland unless you go through Waikaremoana.
Kaikohe is OK, I've stopped there a few times recently. Some decent bakeries even.
I know it's a long way from most of NZ, but Northland is a great place to ride. Just avoid SH1 as much as possible, except for the Mangamukas.

I'd like to really spend some more time up there, I've really only done it three times but each was a bit rushed to get to the top and back as it's a long way and getting through Auckland takes so long. Our November ride organiser is sworn off again, but maybe I van convince him to spend three days up there and time hitting Auckland at 5 in the morning or Sunday.

Northland is a big trip just to get there. I think we did it overnight last time. Short stint to Whanganui on Friday evening, then all the way through to Wellsford he next day.The Northland trip started there.
Was in Waikaremonana couple years ago still some gravel through Waikaremoana its self and out the Rotorua side a bit as well. The motor camp at waikaremoana has quite a few options too from flash motels, couple houses, self containd cabins, basic cabins sllep like 6 and camp sites powered and non powered
I Google mapped some of it and gravel looks real nice on northern side.
When I set off from Southern 18 yrs ago the road quickly turned to large gravel and the RF with 180 rear was making a meal of it so i turned around, in itself a task. If id been on the Suzi GS it would have been much easier.
We are camping it to get full immersion but hopefully not wet type immersion.
We then peel off on way south so get nowhere near Wairoa, more back roads there it seems.
Trying to work out luggage options. I have the tent and bag on pillion seat ok.
I could cheat and throwover old panniers.
But I have some waterproof 15 or 20l sideways Rhinowalk or something someone online suggested for his CF.
I have pannier plates.
I can secure the bottom to the pillion pegs and ti tops to platessort of angled back which gets weight down and central.
Problem is they don't have a real good strapping point to stop them waving about.
They would be better mounted backwards. Hmm.

Timing is everything... You don't want to be earlier than 10 AM or later than 2 PM during the week, depending on which motorway. The weekends can be worse during the day, especially when it's fine or there is an event on.
But when it all works, it's great. Bombays to Warkworth is 107 km and on a good day wouldn't be much longer than an hour.
Or turn off the southern at Manukau and follow the southwestern motorway to SH16. That's a good way to start a Northland ride.
