My understanding is that it has to stay on hold for a minimum of 3 months each time, otherwise backdated rego for the period since it went on hold is due.
I'm reluctant to put mine on hold this winter as I still do the occasional ride and the cops might actually start checking motorbike rego.

Yeah thats my understanding of it too. Obviously they didn't want to make it too easy to avoid paying for something you may not use. Funny how, pre Continuous Vehicle Licensing (CVL) introduced Sept 1997, you could go to a post office and register a vehicle, regardless of how long it had been expired. Just another tax grab rammed though under the guise of (as always) "safety". And, just another thing never to forgive Jenny Shitly (Nat Minister of Transport at that time) for.
