The author comes across as a moaning arsehole. He's whinging about things happening kilometres from where he lives. Imagine what he's like when something actually gets close to his neighbourhood. There's too much inbreeding in the South Island.

Not a fan of the author so I have no respect for his opinion.

I have been riding those roads for 40 years. It's always been a racetrack. I am just pleased to see people out enjoying their vehicles instead of nosediving into their telephones. Hope those dudes had a fun ride, bit of knee down action, and coffee and cake in Lyttelton. Or ride thru to Scumner and get some Sichuan at Miss Peppercorn and annoy the residents of Merivale-on-Sea.

So, in short: fuck that NIMBY wanker.

Thats not journalism, it's a whinge. Not sure what his point was about the IoM TT, I can't see the connection.

I do wonder how some vehicles get a WoF, and it's not just motorcycles causing noise nuisance.

I left police 10 years ago. The only thing that has ever stopped anti social road users behaviour is the earthquakes.

I had had enough of trying to chase the little shits by then.

did you ever ticket or order off road any vehicles (bikes or cars) for excessive noise? There are extremely loud , straight pipe - mainly Harleys - bikes where I live that seem to blast pass police with impunity.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.

The noise rules were almost exclusively used against car drivers. I was the motorcycle sergeant, so tended to have some sympathy with motorcyclists.

The problem with motorcycles is the exhaust is on the outside, and is so easily modified by anyone who thinks they can get an extra hp or two from their steed.

Slip-ons generally have one of two purposes
    1. Reduce weight
    2. Increase power

I might add to that list "looks cool, and sounds mean"

Funny, I got a lot of kickback from people with LAMS bikes who had upgraded their exhausts, which effectively voided their LAMS approval.

The retailers who sold those exhausts were getting grumpy when I started to write tickets for those who had the wrong attitude toward the advice I gave them.

Even NZTA didn't want me to enforce it. But what reason would someone have for changing the exhaust on a bike? What, to make it heavier and less powerful?

    Yeah right.

most of us ride for enjoyment, adding a nice sound to that that is your sound is adding triggering another sense, the added power is a secondary thing. stupidity is increasing the noise beyond what is comfortable then wearing ear plugs.....n annoying everyone else too

If it's about the noise I will give the same advice I used to give the shit bags in cars. Get some ear buds and stream your noise from Spotify. That way the world doesn't get your fetish inflicted on them.

Well actually... Some years back a Brit mag (BIKE?) had access to a dyne and did some checking. Some aftermarket cans made less power than the standard item.

I was very old indeed when I realised that spending money on suspension and tyres was a better investment than anything else on a motorbike. They're quick enough but making them handle better is the trick.

The VStrom forum had the same experience, less power with the yoshi slip on but the sound was the objective. Some tuning bought that right but most people will not tune an exhaust to get more ponies for road use. Me included.

The one time I did get an ecu modified, the tech told me that most gains are made on the intake side. Not sure if he meant fuel/air or pies. Cos pies is still not working for me, yet!
