I cant quite remember my first one. Would have been very late 70s or early eighties .Was it called 6 cross up at the summit there?. I dont think there were meals but there was beer, bonfires and a few melted jackets as nylon ski type jackets standing back to the fire(1 big bonfire) Yakkin away to blokes you never saw before or since. I went to one or two after they moved from the summit site. Sunday mornings we used to go to Tokaanu and have a hot soak in the pools then a big breakfast from the cafe there. The meals and (organised) burnouts and hill climb all got added on over the years.

I've never been, a mate used to go but riding somewhere to be cold never appealed. But maybe I should go once in my life.

Just do it. It’s different every year the vibe of the place but a true kiwi needs to go at least once.
From memory my first one was one of my first decent long distance escapades on 250, bike preloaded and left work straight to rally on Fri arvo.
There’s all the tales of everyone’s mission to get there, titties running around the bonfire and as someone else mentioned the odd fleece jacket self combusting.
Highlight was cops getting there patrol car rained with empty cans for showing up on site (someone left a support vehicle badly parked on SH1) and the dude with Suzuki impulse doing hill climb with lit rescue flares taped to swingarm.
Go now before OSH or other anti freedom legislation ends it.
I need a few years in between to forget the misery of camping, drinking cheap booze and the chilly temps. Oh don’t bother trying to sleep on the Friday night, all the late arrivals from Auckland and excferry roll in during night, then proceed to dig a hole with rev limiter for back tyre so no need for side stand.
You’ll meet all sorts of fellow weirdos and talk about bikes, pretty good really.

The only thing convincing me so far is the option of staying in the pub!

I'll see if any of my riding mates are crazy enough to come with me.

compared to the (late, lamented) Brass Monkey that's already happened. Being herded into a big corral as the only permitted alcohol drinking area was the final nail for me.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

you still seem to find inspiration to come onto here every year since and run down the event however, are you not happy till the thing has gone so it doesn't remind you that you used to actually get off your arse and challenge yourself?

Where do you get the idea I attend every year? I've done three (?) since my first in 1991 or 92. Once or twice at the desert road site, and one couple of years ago at the current site. I do understand the organisers are doing the best they can within the regulations that are imposed - just that those same regs take away much of the enjoyment for me.

Grab your glasses and read what I said, I said you come onto here, meaning kiwibiker, each year i've posted something to encourage people to join in and you seem to think it's quite to shoot it down
Not sure what you've organised over time but I wonder how you do when people try to run it down

hearded into one area is not the way it is these days.....
