Sorry i haven't been paying enough attention. What due diligence is required when buying a vehicle that envokes an RUC?

Come to think of it. What would happen if you had an ancient Bus and converted it from Petrol to Diesel? Guess that's picked up in COF or whatever happens with them.

My car is reasonably economical, 40 mpg overall, so Ranger drivers will be paying less per litre.

I suspect drivers of hybrids will be in for a shock when they find out how much RUCs are going to cost, which of course is the point of the whole exercise.

I have a spreadsheet that works it out At nearly 8 c a km it adds up to a significant sum when you are doing about 700k to a tank.($56!)

Yes. A few years ago when diesel was under $1/l, RUC were higher than the fuel cost.

For a diesel if your vehicle runs at anything less than 4.5l/100k, which a lot of modern small diesels do, your RUC cost is more than the cost of fuel.

RUC cost appears to roughly equal fuel tax on petrol at about 10l/100k, so if you're under this you'd be on the losing end, anything over an you'd be better off.

It’s going to be interesting to see when insurance companies starting pricing in EV vs ICE in premiums… Many cars are now written off due to floor/chassis damage quite easily, and that’s where most EV batteries are which are also expensive to replace.

I think we’re at a tipping point where insurance is going to get more expensive than RUC as cost get passed on to consumer no matter what you driving riding.

I was conservative with my fuel consumption estimate as the Mondeo usually averages 5.5 l/100 km on trips. So really the savings over petrol are minimal.

Clickbait shock story showed up on a browser i don't often use: countdown for diesel. 4 years before gets removed from stations (around uk) leaving cars stranded.

Similar to a similar petrol thread started here now i think about it . I dont believe it but id be upset if I did own one and wanted to sell it as scaremongering will affect the value.

Are the pumps being removed under some sort of directive? The number of diesel vs petrol cars must be small but there would be many many many HGV that run on diesel. I think diesel hgvs are slated for 2040 ban. But the infrastructure required for ev hgv is mind boggling
The charger outputs will need to be in Mega watts ,and many of the trucks will want to charge at similar times because of the restricted driving hours.

I had a 2 L BMW diesel hatch(manual) i would often see 2-3 L per hundred ks between Wellington and Hunterville but then the wind and the hills would knock that back. Also had extremely high gearing not really sutable for NZ. 6th wasnt really useable under 100 km /hr .5.5 l 100 k was easy, round town it would do 6.5

It's clickbait BS. Like NZ, almost every commercial vehicle in the UK is diesel. Even if they started today, it would be impossible to replace them all by 2030.
