I know that road well, it's been a mess for a few years now. The Awakino Gorge is mostly neutered now, that used to be a fun ride!

The new road is for the trucking companies, can you imagine how much it will save them but the public will pay for it one way or another.

And that is the art of political writing. Police have access to ALL (like in any criminal case) that data and used it in court on a work colleague. A months worth of alleged offending was about a two inch high stack of paper with over 300 speed infringements. He got off though as they didn’t do their homework and couldn’t say where the data was stored.

For the average joe it’s prob only going to matter if your in a serious accident but in time as the various technology platforms integrate more smoothly for sure enforcement will become part of it.

Another interesting question I came across, will there be an instant shortfall in tax when all the cars stuck in Auckland traffic aren’t going very far from a RUC standpoint and are no longer paying any tax on the petrol they’re burning in the process?

That's the way. Avoid RUC by getting stuck in congestion.

Out of interest, motorists don't get stuck in congestion; motorists ARE congestion.

If you’ve been to Auckland you’ll know that several hundred thousand of us sit in our cars for long periods of time every day not going very far. There’s no agency involved there, unless you consider the local cycle lanes or public transport routes which are a practical alternative for some, but by no means all.

At the moment, as long as the engine is running, you’re paying tax. Under the new system you’ll only be taxed on distance travelled, regardless of how long it takes you to get where you’re going. That’s going to affect the tax take in Auckland which I thought was an interesting point, I wasn’t advocating one or the other.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem?

Everyone wants everyone else to take the bus, so that roads are free and clear for them to drive on.

Without looking in the mirror, and realising thety are part of the problem.

I take the bus locally when there is no time pressure. But public transport just doesnt work in some instances. The very first bus in the morning on my route to work was supposed to link up with another bus that took me near to my work. But in practise I missed the connection to the work bus. The safest alternative was for me to get up earlier and walk 3.5 km to catch the work bus. Public transport literally added hours to my day. I used to bike but my new work had no shower( the bike ride was 16km)

Alternative transport modes don't work for everyone.

But there are a lot who it could work for, who just don't ever think of it. We have what's called motonormativity, which had driven transport investment infrastructure for so long that it's become a self fulfilling prophecy.

Every time I mention alternative transport modes I get given a long list of reasons why it can't work. If people tried to look at it from the opposite point of view i.e. how can I make it work, there could be change. But that's not how humans are programmed.

In Christchurch for me commuting it doesn't work, 45-50min with 1.5km of walking each way vs 15min in the car. Or even better taking the motorbike or pushbike.

Into the city sometimes works, depending on where you're going, there's a gaping hole in the bus routes west of the square so if you're heading that way there's some walking involved which doesn't thrill the mrs.

There used to be a great bus that went from the north suburts through the city and out to lyttleton, so was an option to go somewhere different for a night out, but they binned it.

So yeah, doesn't really do it for me.
