esp considering ,say InterIslander recomends you do bring your own tie downs
"Motorcycle tie-down guidelinesWe do provide ropes to secure your motorbike but feel free to bring your own tie-downs, particularly during the busy periods of the year. You will need to secure your own motorbike."
when i was on the ferry(Interislander) in July there were taut chains there to tie down too but i didnt see any ropes. My mate had bought tie downs for both of us
Why? You pay per square metre considerably more than you do for a car, so why don't they provide them
Do they recomend truckies bring their own? Imagine that conversation
Do you take your own plate and knife fork and spoon to eat on board, crockery for a glass of beer or coffe,?
do you take your own toilet paper?
why the fuck should they not provide, why the fuck to people like you bend over and let them ream you out for them not providing a service.
All the tiedowns in the world on your bike won't stop some other bike that is poorly lashed down with scraps of twine they have supplied falling on your bike, how will you feel then?
For me personally I have no hard luggage on my bikes, room is real tight for things I shouldn't have to take as i've already paid for.......
Their rubbish about busy times is another cop out,
if they sell you a slot they should provide you the equipment to secure your bike, as for those chains, I spent some time twenty years ago meeting up with the interislander operations manager, it happened to be he came on for a chat on the sunday after a ulysses AGM and there were loads of bikes, as we talked a bike fell due to the practice of using chains and varying tensions when people tighten their bikes, others can loosen.
He did two things as a result of our comms, banned the chains and provided proper labelled plentiful tiedowns as i'd pushed for it with logic mentioned earlier,
Unfortunately he moved on and i changed computers and lost our comms and the whole system deteriorated from then
I dont disagree with any of your points.. However I will take tie downs to ensure my bike doesnt fall over. I wll also do my best that adjacent bikes are also secure.
I had a brand new bike (1 day old) get a huge dent in the petrol tank frm the clutch lever of a bike that fell over in a Welly Bike park

It would be alright maybe for one season then human nature would screw it up.
Pilfering would be rampant (oh they won’t notice couple strops missing x 100’s people using them during year).
Having worked in large fleets u can assure you a large percentage of people manage to get grease and crap everywhere on everything.
Someone would have to maintain records and checks on the gear and the cost would just get passed on. A bike falling over is a small hazard, maybe fire risk, but a truck or two moving about presents a hazard to vessel stability and isn’t easily untangled.
You can courier post something g fragile at reasonable price if you pack it yourself. If not you could take item exposed to a furniture company to ship and pay much more.
