I'm with kerryg here. I've had inline4s, parallel twins, V4s, and square 4s and they're all very different, but I've loved them all.

Go the V's . . . you just cant beat the sound, especially the hollow sound the big V twins make as they come on song under heavy acceleration, sounds like its actually inhaling the road, and you feel your nuts tighten up just to escape being sucked in along with it.
Sure they are slightly down on power over the 4's, but they still go goooood, they sound fantastic, plenty of engine braking (which I like) and they are "relaxed" to ride at legal speeds (for when you just dont feel like attracting disco lights).

i have had both , from two stoke rgv's to tlr's to gixxer seven fiddy to current zx10r , have to say i prefer the inline four , nothing like a gsx-r on full noise!

I've has singles,twin's,triples,four's and a Six..last inline4 was a Z1000J,sold in 1983,the same year i got my first V-Twin (L-Twin) Ducati so i base my like of them on 22 years worth,the novelty hasn't worn off yet..but in saying that,one of my next missions is to do a lap of Australia so am thinking GSX1400...The V-Twin torque thing is a myth,most litre inlines make way more torque than most twins of the same size,they just have a fairly broad and user friendly spread of power and are less busy so the fun factor starts early..maybe that is the attraction...Of course the cylinder angle changes the characteristics.
I haven't ever ridden a V-twin.
But I've ridden an inline twin (zzr250). I'm used to my Zeal (inline 4) and the rapid engine response. The zzr always feels a bit like a tractor, like the engine takes quite a while to get up to speed, but also that the revs don't drop as quickly as the inline 4 when changing gear or slowing down.
Does the zzr just have a big flywheel/heavy crankshaft or are all twins like that?
I'm thinking about an SV650 for my next bike but I'm not sure if I'll like it if the engine responds the same as the zzr's.

a lot has to do with exhaust note really, although i did like the way the torque is really predictable on the big v-twin, thumping out of sharp corners
Inline 4's. Why? Because of the banshee scream as you approach the upper range of the rpm. V twins, while they are sometimes as quick, just sound to lazy for me. They don't get my blood flowing.
kinda like both, my v twin for a nice lazy ride and that oh so nice sound
and the zxr for the noise at full revs, it just sounds fast all the time

Yeah they do, but they aren't going anywhere while doing it. In fact, I don't likethe loud pipes some riders put on these, too much in my opinion. However the sound of a 600 or bigger on full noise, it tears the air apart. Oh yeah.
