I am finally getting a few days off next week and we are flying down to Nelson for a wee holiday. I will hire a bike there for a day or two. Any recommended roads? I believe the Takaka Hill is a good one?

Takaka's great, the roads at the bottom of the hill that go to Takaka are great, Pupu Springs are over there, the road to Collingwood is great, the end of the road up past Collingwood is great.
*sigh*
You can't really go wrong.
I wish I could come too.
*sigh*
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?
Over the Tekaka Hill to Golden Bay is good.

from nelson either head through tapawera(longerway around) or the moutere as its better riding to get to the takaka hill. if more open roads are your thing the ride through to kaikora is quite good too, with a bit of everything, heavier policed though, the hill on otherside of Blenheim is awesome just not long enough but is still good riding out to coastline and good sights as has takaka/collingwood. or head down to westport through the buller gorge, some of the best riding. where do you stop its all good head whichever way you want you cant go wrong.
The ride from Nelson to Blenheim is a beauty, but as mentioned it is a tad short. Definitely follow the coastal hiway from Richmond (Nelson) past Mapua, Ruby Bay, and on thru Motueka, and to Takaka, thats a gem of a trip.
Go over to Taparewa and come back through Stanleybrook up the Mot Valley to Motueka, over the Takaka Hill through Takaka to Collingwood.
Back to Takaka and head left at the High School and go around that way to Motupipi where you turn right and head through to Central Takaka where you join back up on the main road just before Paynes Ford and back over the Hill to Mot, turn right at the Clock Tower and left at the Airport and head back to Nelson via Upper Moutere.
If there's time left then head over the Whangamoas thru the Rai, Pelorus and Havlock where you turn left and go through the Queen Charlotte to Picton and then back to Nelson...

Nordie, I just noticed you own an XR, and are a Nelson man, where do you ride normally?. Im just about to grab a crosser, and go riding with my brother (KLX300R), and we have only been in Nelson a couple of years, and don't know all the tracks etc.
Thanks guys. I have done a lot of these roads by cage and bloody great workvan, ( I have installed/serviced gear at Nelson, Mot and Blenhiem airports) thats was one reason for holidaying there and hiring a bike. And had to choose somewhere the Pillion likes too of course. Dont know how much riding I will get in (hire bikes aint cheap!) but will definetly try to get over the Takaka Hill and around upper and lower Motere and Motueka etc

whangamoas and the queen charlote are the highlights
There are more good roads than I had time to ride. But I will get them next time. As I can get reasonably cheap accomodation in NS, and if I use airpoints to fly over from Wgtn I can spend some $ on bike hire and go more places next time. (This was the first time we have done it, and will probably do it again)
At some stage I want to get my own bike over and do a South Island tour but it wont be for a while so in the mean time I can do bits here and there. A few months ago my wife had to go to CHCH for work so I tagged along and stayed at her hotel, and while she was at work I hired a bike and went all over Akaroa. Bike hiring is expensive compared to hiring a car but if it's just for a day or two then it is a good way to try out different bikes and ride other bits of the country.
