Hi Guys, can any one tell me if there is still gravel on the hiway 70 Kaikoura - Waiau inland road??
I don't mind abit of gravel (in fact i quite enjoy a bit) but when we rode it 5 or 6 or 7 years ago we had obviously just followed the grader and it was tank slapping stuff all the way

I reckon it was 30 to 40 last time - or it certainly seemed like it...............

The inland road has been fully sealed for some time (at least 4 years) and is in very good condition (as of last week)
The only hazards are:
The stunning views
The Waiau Hotel which is an excellent place to stay and has a lot of beer
The tight bends, some of which are deceptively tight.
The camper vans
The road surface is considerably better than SHW 1 and is highly recommended.

So I am a little confused so I guess I have to go with - It is now ALL sealed???
Looking forward to going back that way in early Feb though, 2 or 3 Ks of gravel, or not............. yee hah.

At any stage the roads can be under repair but the road has been officially sealed for some time...
unless you can prove it.
