The rebuild was finished on Sunday morning - cheers Yoshi.

I then waited nearly 4 days for Kerry to get free......

Botany Honda picked the bike up this morning and should have it ready by tomorrow I think...

..... Or else maybe Sat -

New oil, filter, radiator fluid, swap the flywheel/alternator thingameebob, balance carbs, check plugs and replace if necessary, new alternator gasket, make sure all gauges work, start the bike run it and see if it works.

But why did the conrod let go?

JSG is strangely quite as to the cause. Leading factors are big oil leak [ a drop every ten seconds ] and lack of temperature gauge....sounds like the piston seized and the con rod kept going.
    Conclude: lack of maintenance.

What do you mean - we have talked about the issue at length here...

Yes it is as you say.

However it's not lack of maintenance - spent just under $700 on it the day before....... and if you look at most of my threads I'm always asking about how to fix this and that.....

It was more like pushing my luck - I knew I had the oil leak - was going to pick up an alternator gasket later in the day.

However there was a ride down the Dwive so I said - oh what the heck - one more ride.... the oil tank was full, the bike hardly leaked unless thoroughly thrashed.... ......... and there was at least a litre of oil left in the engine when we stripped it.... so no idea.

    Any other theories????

If you had a plenty of oil left in the bike, a minor oil leak. That does not explain why the rod let go.

If the oil leak happens to be on the pressure side of the system, then having plenty of oil may not help. You can have a tank full of oil, but if the pressurised circuit is leaking, the oil ins't getting where it's needed. Modern engines don't just rely on having the oil generally sloshing round (that's OK for the gearbox) For the motor, the oil is piped to the main bearing and big ends (and other stuff) by the oil pump. Only a little bit of oil at any one time in the pipe. If you have a leak, the oil PRESSURE drops. that means there's not enough pressure to keep the bearing surfaces apart (I'm assuming a white metal big end/main.) So the white metal surfaces start touching, they pick up on each other, that makes it steadily worse (maybe over a period of days, even weeks) , until you get a high spot picking up on a high spot. That generates enough heat to momentarily weld the surfaces together. Big end locked, piston tries to come down, something's gonna give. Usually the conrod.BANG.

    Pah! Amateur.

Wait 'til you're on your 3rd engine, then start whinging.

Seriously though, sorry to hear about this. I have a lot of sympathy.

Without looking at the engine stripping it down and appraising the components, no one will know. Even then if parts have been removed and fiddled with, its more difficult. Im guessing a lack of oil preassure, but that is a guess as I havent looked. I for one have better things to do with my time. The broken conrod is the outcome, not the begining of the problem.
