Hi All,

My names Tristan and I'm based in Wellington. Had my bike for a month now and absolutely loving it! It's only an FXR150, so it's small, but the way I see it, it's a good place to start. Used to thrash my sisters scooter around so I'm not completely hopeless.

I dont think you are going to crash, most riders have some experiences in their time they would rather they didnt have.

Just take care and be aware most cage drivers wont give you a second look out there.

Riding in the wind is a beautiful thing and something you will get used to in no time.

The city is about 400 times MORE dangerous than the open road.

The best way to tackle the wind is to relax. The bike won't move around anywhere as much if your upper body is relaxed.

Sorry mate, didnt want to imply that you will, but I think almost everyone does.

I used to think that I woudnt crash cause im 'careful' and not doing hero stuff. One freakish wind gust and braking lesson later and I have come to understand its 'when' am I going to crash next.

You're probably right about that. I've already had a couple of cage drivers pull out in front of me. There was a van on sunday that I swear was an inch away from hitting me. Cheers for the tip about the wind

Been riding for nearly 40 years , and I haven't crashed yet. Of course, I am the site nana. Plenty of others here with similar experience though. So, no, we don't think you're going to crash. Cheer up. But, it is a fact that city riding is more dangerous than motorway or open road. Think how many people have minor "fender bender" accidents around town, in the supermarket car park etc. In a cage, maybe a broken light, bent bumper. On a bike, can be more serious.

Also, experience says that young guys, starting out on bikes, are very good and sensible for the first few months. Then the squidley daemons seize them, they start complaining about not being able to go fast enough , exchange their bike for a race replica, and run it into a ditch. Not saying you will, just looking at the percentages. If you survive that, you should have every reason to hope for many years of safe motorcycling.

As to the wind, yes you get used to it. It's more scarey than dangerous, I've NEVER known anyone actually blown off on a public road. Do a search there's lots of threads about how to handle it.

Oh, and welcome. Ride fast, ride safe, keep the black squishy bits down and the pink squishy bits up

Welcome along. Im a newbie too... to this site, and I have met a few of the Wgtn KBers on a ride. Im sure you will get alot out of your FXR and will learn the joys of riding in our great city and around our region. May catch ya on the road sometime... somewhere

I really hate to prove you wrong Ixion but I WAS blown of the road by a freak gust of wind (into a rocky/grassy bank)up by Lake Ferry, on my friggin birthday too! I am still in the process of fixing my bike now, not to mention the damage it did to my knee! I also know a couple of guys that were "blown" of the road themselves....
