What is it with some bikers.........coming down the hutt motorway this morning in the cage doing about 60 and some twat on a GN250 is filtering through the traffic at about 100..... I am getting really pissed off with this sort of retarded riding, when he finally stuffs it up and comes a cropper... we will just end up paying more for our insurance and rego.

Even worse, I cant even use any of the parts off his bike as spares, although I could stick the 250 badge on the side of the bandit, just for a laugh.

There was a thread on here a while ago where one of our guys saw someone doing something dumb, didn't intervene (enough) and the guy ended up dead later that day.

On one hand it wasn't really his fault and the accident couldn't be blamed on him, but he felt like shit for quite a while for the sake of something he could have done.

Here we go again. Was he doing 100k or did he pass you at 100k faster than wat you were doing.

If you were doing say 30km and he was doing 130km Yes Dangerous, if he pass at 70km the bordering on dangerous. In my view what thats worth.

This is a very interesting debate that you are holding about the motorway buslanes and one that is often mentioned on KB.

It makes very good reading!

It looks as though we might need to see someone challenge a ticket and then see what is determined through case law.

I think that there would be a fair chance that if you cited this information to a police officer they would think about not giving you the ticket. There certainly would be a good chance that it would be thrown out in court.

I think the main thing here is for us to respect our use of the bus lane...i.e. don't piss off the bus drivers and get out of their way.

As long as we are cruising in the lane and not going hard out it is unlikely an officer will be inclined to chase after us and stop us (unless they have instructions from above to crack down or they are having a bad day).

What do you reckon? I look forward to reading your thoughts...

Personally I think anything more than 30k speed differential is getting a little on the risky side. I'm not saying I don't do it, I'm just saying it's risky.

150k speed differential is quite achievable, but I don't try it too often - could be very limiting to my future.

SO long as no one's complaining about me, then that's cool... otherwise I'm gonna have to leave the tape on to get to work too!

You can try it if you like. But if you're in the bus lane on the motorway, they WILL pull you over and ticket you.

re: Specifically excluded from the lane, when it says "Buses Only" I take that as an inclusion. Specifically excluded to me means it would have to say "No Motorcycles". But it seems they're arse about face while trying to mean the same thing.

Motorcyclists and cyclists reminded not to use motorway bus lanes

Transit New Zealand wishes to remind cyclists and motorcyclists that they are not allowed to use any bus lanes on Auckland’s motorways even when the new traffic rules announced by Land Transport NZ come into force on Sunday (27 February).


Transit New Zealand regional manager (acting), Richard Hancy, says the new rules, which will allow cyclists and motorcyclists to use bus lanes on other roads, do not apply to bus lanes on motorways. “Motorways are governed by Transit Bylaw 2002/19 which only allows motorway bus lanes to be used by ‘timetabled passenger service vehicles’. This bylaw overrides the new traffic rules,” he says.


Mr Hancy says that at present bus lanes on motorways are in effect ‘emergency shoulder lanes’ that are converted to bus lanes between 6.30am and 9.30am to accommodate morning peak periods.


“Motorcyclists cannot use these emergency lanes, even when they are temporary bus lanes, because the motorway is a high speed environment and the risk of a motorist pulling off to the side in the event of a breakdown makes it even more dangerous,” says Mr Hancy.


“As far as cyclists are concerned, like pedestrians, they have never been allowed to use the motorways and this remains unchanged.” We are, however, incorporating special cycleways off the motorways whenever possible into all our new projects. We already have a cycleway that runs alongside the causeway of the Northwestern Motorway.


Special signs reinforcing the message that the emergency lanes are for buses only in morning peak periods will be erected along the motorways.

First day ever riding to work, soon after the law came in, "Choice..use bus lanes", got pulled over, he just told me not too, "Bloody beurocrats" were his words, the cops hate the law as much as we do.
They are even running around excluding us for residential bus lanes too, I think it's just to keep the signmakers in business while giving the perception of trying to get traffic moving.

Divot: Are you able to reveal where you get your info from.
I have set my limits of max 50K and 20 above speed of traffic if there is heaps of room and give way to anything else.

Hey, that's awesome research and valuable information. What it does highlight is the discrepency between state law and local government law. As I mentioned in the thread "Motorway bus lanes" the info that I was given was that according to the 'law' motorcyclists were entitled to use bus lanes. That was directly from police national headquarters traffic enforcement. That is, of course in conflict with the information you have posted Divot. In Wellington there are no dedicated motorway bus lanes so the law has no application here. Confusing matters is that state law is contradictory to local government law, where both Auckland City ouncil and Wellington City Council allow bikers to use bus lanes (within the city) and this fact is signposted on the bus lanes (in wellington at least). Yes, these are two types of road we are talking about but the reality is that it is this ambiguity in the law that is causing confusion.

We all did stupid shit, fucked up, and learnt a lesson - be thankfull this guy did it on a GN, i know lots of wankers that did it (and still do it), on much more powerful bikes.
Stop being so hypocritical of others and concentrate on your own riding. Thats what i do.
How would you all feel if someone talked about you like you were some fuckwit riding dangerously out there (cos thats what the cage patrol do).
