    Unhappy NSR Mechanic

    Hey everyone,

So I made the silly decision to buy an '87 NSR (MC16) and it has started to foul the plugs very often (within 10 mins of cleaning...:slap: ). Anyway, I took it to holeshot, who I had assumed would take care of all their Honda bikes.

To cut a long argument short, the owner of the workshop told me they would have a look at it, but would not fix anything that was wrong. His reasoning was that if they did so, something else would 'break' (I guess an evil spirit / taniwha of some sort would be the cause here) and I would blame them for it. Obviously I'm quite dumbfounded that a Honda mechanic would give me this BS, considering they make their money fixing these bikes.

So anyway, does anybody know of a better place that will let me spend my money (remembering this is a 2-stroke)?

What a screaming load of crap, just sounds like a tuning thing. My MC16 was apparently tuned by a bike shop in Papakura, forget the name, but I think Coleman's Suzuki know what they're doing with NSR's, they have one or two now and again, and the guy seemed knowledgable when I went there to buy injector oil.

But first try new plugs instead of cleaned plugs, NGK B9ECS or failing that B9ES I think, and if it's still fouling them too soon (it will foul them anyway but should be more like a month or two I think, not sure as I've only been ridin' mine a few weeks, it's fine) see what the plugs look like, and if they're black and wet and running rich as then take it to the shop.

PS. You the guy who asked on my trademe auction by any chance?

Yes, one in the same taco. I did try new plugs, but the same thing happens, it just takes a little longer! I might try Suzuki (on North Shore?), my friend has an rgv and it seems like they have a lot more customer support. It could be the new (old) engine idea you mentioned in trademe might be cheaper than a top-end rebuild or crank seal replacement on something like this...how much did you buy the other bike for?

Original bike $500, engine minus carbs/reeds/oil pump/etc for $600 odd, incl shipping. I don't think you'll need a top end rebuild to solve it though, may need that anyway being an NSR, but if the plugs are black and wet it can only be tuning. Just call around the shops I reckon, Red Baron do alot of Honda's, maybe they know. Let us know who you find, I'll probably need them one day.

More than likely its been rejetted far too rich by a muppet with no idea. in which case it will foul plugs quick as.
Can also be dodgy coils or High tension leads/plugs that are causing insufficient spark.
    Get the jetting checked.

Yes, well I noticed one of the powervalves had its two control cables round the wrong way, so the muppet idea is probably true. I had not considered the jetting but will definitely mention this to the mechanic (without deflating his ego )

your mechanic is a pecker , nsr's shouldn't foul plugs , changed my last set after 12 000ks just cause they were old
its prob a tuning fault or weak spark causing the probs
check out www.nsr-world.com heaps of info on there

    and nice choice of bike

Just as an update, I have just called the shop back. My bike has been sitting over there in the rain and sun for 2 weeks and they have not looked at it. Excuse 1: The guy that was supposed to look at it fell off at pukekohe and almost died.
Excuse 2: (from the guy on the phone) "to be honest you should just pick it up, I'm too busy working on goldwings..."

Sorry for the language but what a bunch of fucking arseholes. So add to your list of places never to go (back) to:

These guys were great when I brought my vfr. Put new clutch in and replaced a gear lever (that i broke) after the purchase for free. I had no problems.

I'm into my cycling, and like working on new bikes. If someone brought me a tired bike, nearly 20 years old and asked me to make it run like a brand new one - I'd probably tell them to fuck off. My 0.02

Try take a 1985 BMW to Continental cars - I guarantee you they won't be fighting each other to fix it.
    Because I can...

I went bike shopping a few months ago - and visited cyclespot. The salesperson I spoke to was a jerk. Even though I have a licence and had the cash to buy the bike, he suggested I NOT take the bike for a ride until I was certain I was going to buy it.....Hardly the way to make a sale.....

What kind of riding are you doing on it and what do you rev it to?

If you're just using to piss about around town and it very rarely gets into the powerband that could be part of the problem
"If you can make black marks on a straight from the time you turn out of a corner until the braking point of the next turn, then you have enough power."

I'm with Matt - a 20 yr old bike that runs like a piece of shit...it'd be a can of worms and no mechanic that knows his stuff would ever go near it,I don't blame them for telling you to take it away. This close to Xmas they won't even start looking at it.Learn how to fix it yourself and do everyone a favour.

Thing is, it only has 16,000 km on the clock, less than the average 5 yr old bike. I tried everything I could to fix it, believe me, guess I'll be spending my own Xmas pulling it apart again. Also, I wasn't expecting them to fix anything, because they already told me they wouldn't, but to not even look at it while leading me on for two weeks... thats insulting.

have you checked your jet sizes , float level , spark (is it blue and strong or yellow and weak) , what plugs are you running , have you cleaned the coil conections , a common prob on nsrs , good compression? , air filter clean , air box standard?
