speaking of salutes, and i know this is an extremely stupid and random question, but is it illegal to give the one finger salute to highway patrol? or will it just make them pull you over and search you with a microscope until they find something to fine you for?

Always preferred the nod myself, it just looks cool :P

I think as others have said, its a visual acknowledgment, without the over familiarity of a wave, or throwing flowers and chocolates at the oncoming rider.
