Thruxton Maybe?

Anyone got one of these? I see they are using a 900cc motor now. Had a look at a demo one here in Invercargill which I'm half tempted to take for a run.

Really, I've lusted after a Norton Commando since I was in short pants. Now that I could perhaps afford one, the thought of oil leaks, Smith electrics, and breakdowns at any time isn't so attractive anymore. Which is probably why I have the R80.

Anyway, the Thruxton seems like a fair approximation to a Norton. Possibly with the after-market Norton-style pipes which Thunderbike have.

I dont own one, but there is one at a Street and Sport in Chch, stunning! A 900 as well. My heart has been leaning towards that bike since I saw it.

I would be interested to read people thoughts on this too...

We have one on test at the moment. Looks good but sounds like a GN250 with the standard pipes fitted.

we are twins separated at birth. I'm going through the same dilemma at present.

Of course you could buy a NEW norton commando later this year... $20k USD but soooooo pretty.

The Thruxton is a lovely looking thing. I havent yet ridden one, but there are two items from the spec sheet that concern me:

1. it has carbs. (in this day and age, come on!.. sure it needs to look like it has carbs but fuel injection in this day and age must be cleaner, and easier to alter (especially given #2 below) Pipes and a power commander for under a grand will do wonders for a lot of bikes....

2. Weight and (lack of) power: 205kg dry, and 69HP WTF!! I just sold a Suzuki SV650 which had more power and weighed 30kg less. Bonneville is the same weight but with EVEN LESS power....

Just kidding - I like it but they shouldn't pin-stripe the tail, and it looks a little underdone... (coils should be mounted mirror fashion, a little less bouncy looking in the rear would be nice, even (dare I say it) an old fashioned mudguardy thing)

Ah but so many different options to modify and play with... injection - easier mods but limited range... can you imagine putting full on race-bored downdraft Webers? Ok - a chunk of work, but OMG

You are an evil evil evil man... I know this because:

a) you started up the site which makes me do less work and get shouted at a lot
b) you've got that wonderful GB400/600 TT thing what I love and I want
c) that site is horrible for me... How am I expected to live with my lovely little SRV when there are things there for an SR500 or 650W and such lovely lovely pics.

that must be a test mule. the black one has a headlight and looks more production ready.

BTW they arent in any sense of the word a "British" bike any more. (a good thing...) they're AMERICAN !!!

I didn't realise that Norton was being resurrected. But US$20,000 is a bit much for me, not to mention my indulgent wife. And must have missed the earlier Thruxton thread although I did a search.

With the strength of the NZ$ against the pound sterling, Triumphs are possibly as cheap as they will ever be. Something to think about.

I'm suprised that I haven't come across any faired examples of Thruxtons. Cafe racers often had a bikini fairing and a small one would dress this bike nicely. It looks great naked so the fairing would need to be Isle-Of-Man style.

Took one out for a spin at an open day at AMPS and I wasn't that excited by it. It definitely has lots of potential to be a better bike than it is with some mods. I find my GB600 more fun to ride mainly because of it's smaller size. It's all relative to the rider I guess.
